[Rome Chain Lock] very good bicycle chain lock for the price, 36 ounces heavy, 7/10 security rating
This is a review of the Citadel Rome chain lock. There are some other much different products in this listing that I have not used. This chain lock is much better than I was expecting for this price. I have not heard of this brand before. I have used good quality bicycle chain locks from other popular brands (Kryptonite, etc). For the $20 price, you usually get much thinner chain links from those brands (5mm or 6mm) and those skinnier links are much easier for a thief to cut with a big bolt cutter. This lock has hefty 8mm chain links. I have not tried cutting it, but they claim to use hardened steel, which should be very difficult to cut with non-powered tools. 33 inch length sounds big, but in reality it is only slightly larger than a large U-lock. You can use this lock in place of a U-lock (or in addition if you like using 2 locks). Because of the flexible chain, you can also use this lock in places where a U-lock wouldn't fit, eg the cheap bike racks that are often found at schools. It comes with 3 keys, which is handy for people who tend to loose them. Weight is 36 ounces, which is about the same as a good U-lock. Because the chain lock is more flexible, it may be easier to carry in a backpack than a U-lock (no bike mount is included). For the price, I think this is a great lock. The company's advertising gives this a 7/10 security rating (compared to 10/10 for their U-lock and 3/10 for their cable lock). I'm giving it 4 stars for now, but may upgrade if it holds up to heavy use.

Love it
Great chain. Love it and use it with my bicycle when going to the gym.

Not for outdoor use
Worked great for 3 months and maybe 15 lock cycles. Kept it on my bike in a covered porch and the Florida humidity must have corrupted the locking mechanism. One day the key would bind in the cylinder and I couldn't get it to open. Luckily it was while the bike was not chained to anything.

It is good and solid
My son is riding his bike to work more these days and needed a way to lock his bike up, as his job isn't in the best of neighborhoods.+ This is a heavy duty chain! As you can see by the picture this thing weights over 2lbs/32+oz. Since people aren't normally running around with the exact tool to cut through something like this, the sturdiness of the chain is comforting.-- It is heavy to carry in a backpack. Two pounds does not sound like a lot, but it is noticeable when sitting in a backpack.+ Can be used for other things than a bike lock, such as chaining two gates together.> It is and isn't too short. It just reaches through the front tire, the frame, and then around a pole to lock. But it is kind of a tight fit, so depending on what you are locking your bike up against may or may not work if it is too thick or you cannot get your bike flush up against it.+ I like the "flat" keys that are less likely to poke through clothing or backpacks.OVERALL: A sturdy chain that he takes to work and so far has disinterested anyone wanting to mess with his bike.

Not more secure...
This a very heavy duty bike chain. It isn't super long, so you have to be a little creative if you want it to lock around the wheel and frame. I was a little disappointed that the fabric sleeve that covers the chain itself is fairly easy to slide up and expose the chain, which makes it not really any more secure from thieves than a normal chain....it just looks nicer. Overall, it's fine, but isn't really any more secure than a normal bike chain....

Heavy duty, yet easy to carry and use
This is a heavy duty fabric encased bike chain with 3 pick-resistant keys. The chain portion of the lock measures 31” long, while the lock and post add another 2” to the total length of the product. The entire chain weighs 34.25 oz, or just over 2 lbs. The chain is permanently attached to the lock on one end; on the other end it is attached to the post which fits in the lock, so there are no loose parts to get lost. The nylon fabric sleeve is firmly attached to the chain with rivets at both ends, so it can’t slip or slide around. The hardened steel lock links are approximately ¼” in diameter. The lock comes with 3 straight-edged keys, making the lock much more difficult to pick than ordinary cut-edged keys. The Citadel logo appears in large green letters on the nylon sleeve; it also appears on the side of the lock. The product was made in China. This is an impressive looking lock, and when it comes to security equipment looks are extremely important—you want the next bike on the rack to look easier to get at than yours. But not only does the lock look good, it also feels heavy and strong in the hands. It’s probably the most solid lock you can get short of a titanium U-lock, but since this lock incorporates a chain, you get at least some flexibility, which a U-lock just doesn’t give you. While the chain is only 31” long, I’ve found it’s long enough so that I can secure both my rear wheel and frame together to a steel bike rack. The chain isn’t long enough to secure both wheels at once, but if the chain were any longer, it would be really heavy. If you’re concerned about locking both wheels, you might want to carry a lighter weight cable lock just for the wheels, and then use a big heavy-duty lock like this one to hold the bike fast to the rack. Note that this chain isn’t long enough for most motorcycles, although you could conceivably drape it around the back tire of a motorcycle.I really like the way the nylon sleeve provides some padding around the chain, preventing the chain from scratching my bike, and making it harder for someone with metal cutters to see how the chain links fit together. I also like the 3 keys that Citadel provides instead of the standard two, and the design that incorporates the lock with the chain so the lock can’t get separated from the chain and lost. All in all, this is a great choice for outdoor and inner city security, especially if you can find a bike with a lesser lock to park yours beside.
