Seems like many lemon units from reviews. Now that you’ve owned this for quite a while, still happy with it?

Quite happy. I got a small leak I had to fix but I live in a very humid area so it was bound to happen. Had it for 4 years.

Can the Preset for automatic turn off and turn on at 43 psi be changed, reset?

While you can change your output psi, you cannot change the preset on/off feature. I usually set my psi around 17-20, and occasionally turn off my compressor and turn it back on when it drops below that.

How does one know the psi of the regulator when the only gauge is just the tanks pressure?

The gauge shows the regulated pressure not the tank pressure.

How can I prevent it from building too much pressure? I left it on, but it was not running, and then it exploded paint all over me.

I don’t think that is the compressor, sounds like a clicker airbrush that suddenly became unclogged. It shuts off when the tank is full and the pressure regulator set by you releases the pressure. Sadly I think this is user error friend.
