An Hasidic Approach to Cognitive Therapy for Weight Loss
Holy Eating: The Spiritual Secret To Eternal Weight Loss by Robert Schwartz represents a curious approach to weight loss that combines Chabad hasidism with cognitive therapy. The book's eight chapters emphasize a conscious, mindful, approach to eating based on a rather fundamentalist approach to prayer and God. I appreciate the author's attempt to bring Jewish spiritual and religious meaning to the problem of dieting. Unfortunately, this approach does not have much to offer to those that are skeptical or agnostic. The author discusses the importance of rituals and includes several meditations or prayers. Oddly, he does not include the standard Jewish blessings for eating various kinds of foods. This seems like a missed opportunity to add an especially useful mindfulness practice for eating.

Excellent book
Excellent book easy to read. Focused on spirituality with many blessings to G-D. Beautifully written with how much G-D loves us and wants us to healthy and disease free. Learning what G-D wants for us and how to be closer to him by controlled eating. Excellent book easy to read. Focused on spirituality with many blessings to G-D. Great book
The author speaks from a Jewish prospective, but any person believing in a Higher Power or God would find this book helpful in placing food consumption in an entirely different light than the standard diet book. He provides biblical references to show that God does want us to be both fit and trim. He also provides meditations and prayers to help in moderating food intake by continually orienting ourselves to the spiritual power always available.

Elegant
Elegant and appreciated. The "truth" will set you free...and this goes beyond the "world of man" to the "realm of holy" choice making and thinking.

A spiritual approach to weight loss
"Holy Eating" is based on one big idea:The most compelling intellectual, moral and personal reasons for behavioral change often won't produce change at all if they don't have a religious or spiritual component. That's hardly a novel concept. It is the core of 12-step addiction programs. However, very few other diet books advocate a spiritual approach to weight loss.So if you would like to lose weight or just eat healthier, should you buy this book? You should, if ...The "if" is, if you consider yourself a spiritual person, preferably but not necessarily of the Jewish variety. If you are spiritual, invoking God consciousness while eating might indeed be your secret to eternal weight loss. Dr. Schwartz presents several approaches, including meditation, in an accessible writing style.

This is what I needed!
There is such a huge disconnect between food and spirituality. Dr. Schwartz manages to convey the message that gluttony is a sin in a gentle way that encourages the reader to keep reading. The meditation quotes were very helpful. The three main principles of Kabbalah are very helpful to re-focus when you feel the need to overeat and forget the spirituality of eating.Eating as an act of worship is an usual concept for most modern people. However, it makes total sense. My favorite idea from the book reflects that every meal is an opportunity for spiritual victory! It's a chance to thank the Creator for His bounty. It's a chance to reflect that the Melekh ha Olam cares for us...as individuals...and He lovingly provides us with just the amount we need to be satisfied.I felt that the book was theologically sound, inspiring, and realistic. For a person who has struggling with food addiction but has always been a relgious person, this book was the key that unlocked a world of deeper devotion to HaShem and health! I cannot recommend this book enough.
