Another classic Adventure Game? well, kinda...
At its best Thimbleweed Park captures what made Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, and other classic adventure games such fun to play. At its worst, it's frustrating and boring. Fortunately, the game has far more of the former and less of the later.Thimbleweed Park was made for the PC, ported to the PS4, and released in a physical package (you can get the digital for $7.99) by Limited Run Games. As a collector's item, the PS4 edition includes the following:+Full game on Disc (no download/connection required)+Manual - it's about 6 pages in B&W, but hey most games don't even come with one these days+3 Stickers+Post-It notebook+Soundtrack on Tape Cassette+Newspaper+Map+Old-Style "Big Box"The newspaper is very cool and fun to read! The map is a nice touch. Everything else I could do without. The soundtrack (cassette) is exclusive to the PS4 version; But, who exactly has a cassette player these days? The game takes place in 1987, sure people had cassette players back then, but seeing as the game was released in 2017, a digital or CD soundtrack would have been much preferred, or at least include that WITH the cassette. The game itself has a few issues. Overall it plays quite well, but some of the puzzles are nebulous. This is not exclusive to just this game, but many adventure games have issues that basically amount to the player simply doing "trial-and-error" until they find the right combination. Thimbleweed Park has (to an extent) these exact same faults. The game also knows this, so it comes with a built-in hint system which is very welcome! Other problems - the game never tells you when you can control a new character! At one point I was stuck in the game and even looked at the hints which made no sense... UNTIL I found out all of a sudden (without the game letting me know) I could control a whole new character! There are a few other such "issues" with the game. However, overall no major issues.I will also add that the story is very good, and this has always been one of the strengths of adventure games. The game is very humorous, which again is par for many adventure games. You can NOT die in this game, which is nice. No need to constantly reload! The graphics could never compete with games that have huge budgets, so they purposely used "retro" pixel art, and it looks wonderful! Voice acting (the game is fully voiced) is fabulous as well. Music is decent, if forgettable. Honestly, this is more fun than most so-called AAA games! The limited edition was limited to just 2500 copies worldwide. Original cost was $64.99 + S&H. Over time this will become more valuable. If you just want to play the game, purchase the digital copy. If you want to experience the retro-feel of what it was like to play such games "back in the day" (and especially if you're a collector), get the limited edition.Final Score: 85/100 -- absolutely worth playing!
