An album that really, really grows on you!
I already owned Eau De VIXX and have written a review of it before, but I bought it again (under this different listing) as a present for my sister-in-law, who I recently introduced to VIXX. Rather than write a review again from scratch of the same item, I've pasted in my original much longer review below:--My first VIXX comeback! I got into VIXX around December, and I've really fallen in love with so much of their music, and four months later, Eau De VIXX was announced. As the title suggests, this time around the concept revolves around perfume and is thought to have been inspired by the 1985 novel of the same name, which sees a perfumer's descent into murder. The album itself is available in two versions: Red and Black - I went with the Red as it was the more colourful of the two, and seemed to fit this concept better. Inside you'll find a photobook, a randomly picked member photocard (I got Hyuk!) and a postcard. There's also a scent guarantee card, and when opening for the first time, you'll find the album even has its own fragrant scent - how brilliant is that?! On the disc, you'll find twelve tracks:1) Scentist - Like the album itself, Scentist is a song that has really grown on me. When I first heard it, I loved the aesthetic of the music video and I did like the song, but unlike their previous releases such as Shangri-La or Error, it didn't immediately stand out and grab me. Instead, Scentist is more like On & On - it didn't wow me at first, but having now listened to it dozens of times, my opinion of it has vastly improved.2) Odd Sense - Do my ears deceive me? Has my favourite VIXX member, Hongbin, finally been given lines? Not just a few lines, but he has the most lines in the entire song! FINALLY!! I loved Odd Sense the minute I heard it - it's hard-hitting and has an insanely crisp and catchy chorus. Hearing Hongbin vocalize with Leo and Ken on the chorus is just wonderful, and his voice, which sounds so low, raspy and commanding, melds so well with their comparatively higher voices. Ravi is incredibly quick with his rap too - Odd Sense is a serious contender for my favourite song off this album.3) Silence - Combining heavy brass sounds with a more traditional Pop sound, Silence moves at a slightly quicker pace than the previous track. Ravi's lyrics do a great job at carrying on the perfume scent concept, and once again his raps are lightning quick. When I heard the "Why don't you talk about us? I told you everything baby" hook for the first time, I wondered briefly if this was a subtle jab at how VIXX so underappreciated by some people. It's probably not, but it's an interesting way of looking at it.4) My Valentine - After three songs of everyone singing in relatively low registers, My Valentine offers a bit of relief and brings a slightly lighter feel with it. The lyrics can be interpreted as being both romantic and sensual at the same time, and the higher dreamy-like voices match the lyrics well.5) Circle - Like Silence, the strength of Circle lies with Ravi's lyrics. While talking of a romantic relationship, the lyric "There's no error in the sum of us", and the song's called Circle, get it? I'm not quite sure why, but I also love the line "We have a secret, and it is beautiful".6) Good Day - I think my favourite thing about Good Day is the refreshing change of sound. Unsurprisingly, many of the songs on Eau De VIXX are quite synth-heavy, and while there's a bit of synth in Good Day, it also has a nice acoustic sound going for it. This one's light, bouncy, fun and a perfect Summer song.7) Escape - This song continues the relatively light R&B sound of the previous tracks, and with lyrics that talk of escaping and running away, it's easy to get into. My favourite bit of this song is Ravi's "Run away" whispering, especially at the end as the music fades out, but we still hear his voice whispering "Run away" at the same volume. It's creepy, but really well done too.8) Trigger - This song has enjoyed a fair bit of popularity and success for a non-title track, and listening to it, you can see why. Admittedly it is probably the most conventional song on the album, and fairly close to being standard Pop music ... but in this case, that isn't a bad thing. VIXX still bring enough of their own qualities to the song, and the music and lyrics heard on the chorus are once again incredibly catchy. I really enjoy this one, and it's definitely a highlight for me.9) Resemble - I've heard that this song is apparently about N and Hongbin's friendship, and if true, that just makes this song sweeter still. Resemble is the most gentle, slow song on the album with some of VIXX's best vocal work too. It doesn't need to suddenly burst into life at any point - it's just very soothing and relaxing throughout.10) Navy & Shining Gold - Essentially the last new song on the album, and this is a perfect way to bring things to a close. It feels like the kind of song you play over the end credits of a film, or to bring a concert to a close. It's happy and hopeful, and Ravi proves yet again how talented he is as a lyricist too.11) Shangri-La - Previously released as the title track of VIXX's last EP, Shangri-La can be enjoyed again on this album too. As I said in my review of the Shangri-La EP, this is one of those songs that you feel more cultured for just listening to. The combination of Oriental sound with a modern synth sound is seamless, and both the song and the music video feel like pure art.12) Scentist (Instrumental) - Interesting to listen to this version of Scentist without any vocals. The music itself feels rather simple, but in a "Less is more" kind of way. It has a style vaguely reminiscent to the music from Shangri-La, and it's nice to hear a continuation of that sound. As I've already said, Eau De VIXX isn't an album that grabs you straight away. At first you may just like it, but over a couple of weeks, you'll soon love it. In this respect, it's a bit like On & On or Voodoo, and now that I've had time to properly process this release, songs like Scentist, Odd Sense, Circle or Trigger have really gone up in my estimation. Of all their albums, it's this one that by far feels the most personal, due to how much more involved they actually were in the production. It's also a lot fairer when it comes to things such as line distribution too. Highly recommended!

Kings of Concept mastering the senses
Amazing album with some real fab songs, this group aren’t known as the “kings of concept” for nothing. This whole theme of the scentist - the card was perfumed different for the red and black versions of the album and even had specific perfumes for sale at the concerts in Seoul and Japan. Genius really when you think about music and add in the sense of scent that you can easily bring the audience into the whole atmosphere. Includes Shangri-la which if you haven’t seen you have to go watch the MV for, literally check out the official Rovixx channel on YouTube. So much to appreciate and scentist video is jam packed with symobilism and links to the concept it’s mind boggling. (Also check out Ravi, Leo, Ken for solo works and Hakyeon, Hongbin, Hyuk and Ken for their acting performances!)
