Q: The ap has ceramic burrs. the bg has steel. which would be longer lasting and more consistent over the long haul?

They should both last a long time, and if you ever determine that you need new burrs, they're relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. Burrs should last 5-7 years. If you notice the grinder is no longer capable of grinding coarse coffee, then it might be time to replace burrs. The ceramic burrs should be a little more sturdy, but not enough to be a reason for picking the ceramic burr over the stainless. You should decide based on your primary brewing method.

Q: What is the range of grind size possible from this machine? I need a very rough grind for cold brew, and very a fine grind for espresso.

this grinder is perfect for that, I own two (AP & BG). The grind size you can get from these both are perfect for espresso or any filter coffee.
