Brings Back Memories
Played the original version when I was child. Was pleasantly surprised to see that they had remade.Have been playing with my family. Great method to keep kids away from the screen.

As brilliant as I remember!
Whats a blast from the past! I had a lot of the fighting fantasy books as a kid and loved them.I found my original copies falling apart and with various hand drawn maps and inventory lists from when I last played them stuffed between the pages.I hoped these might be stories my own kids might enjoy so I got this copy for my daughter. She likes me to read the story and she makes the decisions and fights any enemies. She is loving choosing her own path through the story and it's got her wanting to play again to make different choices. She is making me proud carefully hand drawing her own map as she progresses through the story and diligently updating her inventory list.I'm so pleased that stories like this are still being published. My daughter gives it her highest rating of 12 out of 10.

Powerful concept
This is an awesome beginning book to an incredible series! There is a lack of effort for the Scholastic illustrations, but because of Jackson's entries it seemed like the book it was back in the days! I'm really encouraged about Scholastic republishing some of the books, especially The Citadel of Chaos and looking forward to becoming the Creature of Havoc! For us, a very versatile and fun book!

It's a book and it's a game, it's like catdog but it's gamebook.
This is the first book of its kind that I have bought so I don't really know if it is better or worse than other books like it but it's fun. When I got the book and realised it had some kind of battle system I was a little put off because it seemed a little complicated but after a couple of battles I felt I no longer needed to refer to the instructions for help and I was really enjoying it.When I saw the size of the book I thought it wouldn't take very long to get through but I was wrong and we still have not finished it after a few days of failed attempts. If you enjoy things like dungeons and dragons but want something to do on your own this book is idea and there are other books in the series.Overall I found it fun to play its not perfect and I feel some older and more experienced people would find it very simple but definitely good for beginners to this kind of thing. It's good to have some dice, you only need 6 sided dice but the book also has randomly rolled dice rolls through the book, so buying dice isn't required but definitely worth it.You will also need some writing pads and pens.I used notepad on my laptop to save paper.

Best Present !!!
I bought this as a stocking filler for my son. He's 42 and I thought it would take him back to his childhood when he had the complete set - it kept him quiet for hours just like back then. He wouldn't even let his 10 year old have a look!!

Brings back good memories
I couldn't believe these game books are still going! This is the first Gamebook I ever played and it is a little basic compared to later adventures. However if your looking to roll dice and go on a short campaign with monsters, puzzles, choices to make and a well written story then this will work.

Great fun! Holds up surprisingly well!
I've been looking to scratch that RPG itch in a solo format, and I saw that the Warlock of Firetop Mountain was one of the first solo RPG gamebooks from back in the 80s, so I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't expecting much considering its age, but color me impressed; this book is great fun! It has a very old school feel that is obviously a side effect of being a product of its time, but I think it fits in today alongside some OSR stuff you might see from D&D: real down-to-earth classic fantasy.I loved the handcrafted nature of the dungeon. I've recently played some games like Four Against Darkness that rely heavily on random dice rolls to generate dungeons, but the dungeons always come out feeling artificial and hollow. Not Firetop Mountain! Everything is deliberately placed to give the dungeon a real sense of history and personality. You would NEVER see anything like a werewolf ferryman trying to scam you out of gold coins in Four Against Darkness, I guarantee! One initial complaint I had with the game is that, for the most part, you can't backtrack to previously explored locations, meaning you can miss some important items for completing the dungeon. The more I thought about it though, the less it bothered me. I think the one-way nature of the dungeon really forces you to consider your options, and also promotes multiple playthroughs, using knowledge from previous attempts to try and collect as much of the right stuff as you can. It almost feels like an arcade video game, trying to go for the perfect run. It's also fun to draw a map of the dungeon as you play, filling it out with more detail in each subsequent attempt until you finally have a complete map.All in all, loads of fun!
