Why does this take an AA battery since they're powered with solar? Do the batteries last very long?

They are powered by rechargeable AA batteries that come installed. This means you could probably replace them if they start to weaken over time. But for the price, it might be cheaper and easier to simply replace the entire set of lights if they wear down after a couple of years.

You don't need any batteries it's solar powered. You just turn the switch to on and it works automatically. Even on cloudy days it gets enough sun to light them when it gets dark.
