What is a "dakini"? and what does this title mean?
If you have some curiosity about these questions, this is the best book I have read on the subject. The presentation style is clear and comprehensive, (quite a feat to balance both of those attributes). This book is scholarly and carefully researched so there is a sense that you are not just reading somebody's opinion, but instead are being presented a historical overview that reveals the relevance of these issues to our current crisis. Since our meditation center, The Lexington Shambhala Meditation Center, is investigating the question of the feminine principle, and what that might mean for creating a more enlightened culture, we have recently reviewed over 20 books, (not a complete survey by any means), and gathered a number of people together to share our own experiences. We enjoyed conversation and dialogue about the implications for becoming personally more conscious and aware of the subtle, and life-giving, influence of the feminine principle in our personal realtionships and community. This is not a handbook but rather a wise guide whispering in your own listening ear.

What an amazing job Simmer-Brown has done with her research
What an amazing job Simmer-Brown has done with her research, study, and practice in introducing us to the dakini! A must read for those wishing to known more about this largely secret facet of Indian and Tibetan spirituality.

Highly informative, and delightful to read
Dakinis are all in the news now. I've been into this path for decades. Nice to see a very knowledgeable writer take on the subject, and cut through the misinterpretations with ease and grace. Thank you!

Interesting but
This book was way too deep into the past and present culture of Tibetan Buddhism in relation to the Dakini. I was looking for something different and did not like the energy of the book and what it implied in regards to how Dakini are "born" in modern times. It excluded other cultures and yes I know it's tibetan Buddhism , but I thought it would show and teach about the Dakini in a different manner.

Finally, after 50 years of wondering; Judith Simmer-Brown has made Dakini's crystal clear.
Judith Simmer-Brown is that rare scholar who speaks our ordinary everyday language. In Dakini's Warm Breath she takes us on an amazing journey with one foot in historical facts and the other in legends. Her writing reminds me of Joseph Campbell, uncovering nuggets of truth and wisdom in the dry as dirt history and in juicy myths that are hard to believe. That is a brave edge for a scholar to walk, and she delights us the whole way! Now I see dakini's everywhere...

Must read for understanding the feminine principle!
So very well researched and the detailing of years of hardwork to include different perspectives, ideas about the feminine principle and dakini energy as in the world Mantrayana Buddhism. Very immersive with enough images to support the visual depiction of the power and dynamic energy of the dakini world

A rigorous examination of Dakinis
It's a good book, quite descriptive... Some sections seem to provide exhaustive details on certain nuances which can make it dry at times. Hopefully you are very motivated to learn more, which will keep it interesting. Its a good compliment to those investigating Tantra and how it's implemented in Tibetan Buddhism.
