Very happily I discovered that both the 16" and 22" have ...
I chose Remo's Buffalo (both 22" and 16") exactly because of the synthetic skin. Where I live it's humid all year long and there were many times during a drumming circle when natural skin drums had to be heated over a fire - at times it would have been nearly impossible to play them. Granted, the Buffalo drums do that have that homemade beauty that others possess, but do not be fooled by this: their voices are mesmerising, with deep overtones that talk to you through the drum. Everything in Shamanism has a spirit, and so do these drums; if you get one, honour them in the same way as you would do to a natural skin drum.A pleasant surprise is receiving both of them with an intricate rope weave at the back. In the beginning the Buffalo drums sported a simple rope handle with plastic in the middle. I admit - this was off-putting for a long time, but I was willing to suffer it so long as the drum would be able to be played in all weather conditions. Very happily I discovered that both the 16" and 22" have a lovely handle now that is both a good grip, and aesthetically much more pleasing. The photo indicates the new handle.I really suggest these drums, especially if you live in an area where it's always humid. It's nice to know that the drum will never fail to return a response and that you can rely on it whenever you want :)

Beautiful deep resonant sound
Absolutely love my drum. Beautiful deep resonant sound, and vegan too. I love playing it. Really glad I bought it. Arrived fast and in perfect condition. I have the smaller 14inch one, and I love that one too. This one is on another level all together! Very happy!

I love this drum
I love this drum. I have one that is made from real Horse skin.and although it sounds amazing, its highly sensitive to changes in temperatures, and if it gets cold and you have no fire to warm it by (highly unlikely when walking through the woods or standing by oneself on a hillside somewhere lol!) then you cant use it. And I walk along happily drumming and before you know it, "thud thud" the sound goes "dead" and it is sooooo frustrating! You can warm it up by rubbing it with your hand but on a cold day, I do not have any success. That is why I was recommended this drum. Its synthetic nature means that is can be played in all temperatures. So this is my drum of choice when I want to drum outside and am not at a Shamanic circle where there is a fire to warm the skin. I am SUPER pleased with this Remo drum!!!Some people are of the opinion that Synthetic skinned drums are no where near as good to use as real skin, however although with real skin you can get such a wonderful range of sounds etc, the synthetic one is still absolutely amazing. I love the sound of this one but rather than saying the real skin is "better" I just feel personally that these are not really comparable and that having both real horse and a fake Buffalo, I love them both the same!. I use it for journeying and its great. I also have friends who use synthetic drums for Shamanic healing and they work just as well as a real skin drum , although I do not use this for treatments, and that is nothing to do with this drum, it is just because my horse drum and I have a solid working relationship when it comes to using it on clients for drum diagnosis and such like so that is the only one I use. The only thing I found is that I was not keen on the beater. Probably just me, I do not know. So made my own to add the personal touch. The stick is boring as well for me so I used a piece of Hazel wood for mine. I also used sharpie pens to draw on mine as I found it too plain, but others may love this. I used a black colour with a little green and red to draw and write my designs on it.. Lots of people have tried using it and all say they like the feel and sound of it. It is really well made and arrived super quick! Thank you, I will love this for many years to come.

Not a compromise to a hide drum
My buffalo drum has just arrived and I'm really pleased with the quality, depth and reverberation of the sound it gives. I am vegan and attend regular drumming circles and didn't want a hide drum. I thought a Fibreskyn 'substitute' would be a compromise but I'm so happy to be wrong! In fact, it sounds better to me, and I know it won't be subject to variations in weather conditions/humidity. I can't wait to get drumming!

Great sound, perfect for shamanic drumming :)
I am thrilled I decided to go ahead and purchase this drum (in part because of the good reviews). It really is the perfect size for me. My friend bought the 22 inch but I found it too bulky and big for my liking. This 16 inch drum is far more portable and my arms don't ache holding it. The beater with it is perfectly adequate but I will get/make others for different sounds. I think the rope is a little scratchy but I will be adding ribbon and other items to personalise it myself. The benefit of this drum is that it can be played in any humidity so perfect for indoor and outdoor use without changing the tone. Highly recommend this lovely drum!
