Y201 Portable Battery Powered Methane Propane Combustible Natural Gas Leak Sniffer Detector

I had been smelling gas in our house ever since we moved in more than 2 1/2 years ago. Nobody else in my family was bothered by it, but it bothered me immensely! Everyone kept saying it was normal to smell a little gas when you use the oven or stove, but it didn't seem normal to me & it made me nauseous. I could smell it all the time, even when the oven & stove hadn't been used at all.I bought this little device to confirm my suspicions that the gas was actually leaking. It was very easy to use & worked perfectly! One little tip: at first I didn't find anything & wondered if it was working at all, so we tested it with a Bic lighter as other reviewers have mentioned & discovered that the sensitivity was turned down too low, so go ahead & turn it up until that first red light comes on & the ticking stops or nearly stops.We located the leak coming from a worn out connection on the back of the oven. Fixed the connection, no more leak & no more nasty smell!The only downside to this device is that it doesn't tell you how much gas is present, only that the gas is there. This is not really an issue though since I only needed it to confirm that the leak was there (and convince my family!) before calling the gas company to come out & check it. The gas company was able to use their more advanced device to determine that the leak was very small & luckily it was not terribly dangerous.Even if I hadn't found a leak, it would have given me peace of mind just to know for sure. This device can detect many types of gas & I will continue to use it regularly to monitor for any other issues. The house we rent is very old & has plumbing issues, so I expect the ability to test for sewer gas will also come in handy.I wish I had gotten this device sooner & not suffered so long! I highly recommend it to anyone who may suspect they have even a very small leak. Small leaks can turn into bigger leaks & become dangerous, so it is always better to be safe than sorry! I absolutely love this product. I thought I was smelling gas in the room where the furnace is located. I had been smelling it for several months. I kept asking my husband if he could smell it and he could not. I should have called the gas company or an expert in furnaces, but I just put it off. Life just kept happening and I thought if he could not smell gas, it was probably just me thinking that and I kept putting off doing anything about it. That was not a wise decision. The wise decision I did make was ordering the Techamor Y201 Portable Methane Propane Combustible Natural Gas Leak Sniffer Detector. Once I received it, I had a hard time following the written instructions, so I decided to watch a you tube video. It was very easy to do after watching the video. Sure enough as soon as I aimed the Leak Sniffer Detector towards the gas valve it went off like crazy, red lights lighting up and a warning signal!!!! I then went into a room where I knew there would not be any gas detected. When I walked out of the room into suite next to the room where the furnace was, the detector immediately went off with red all the red lights on and the warning signal and I was not even in the room where the furnace was. This let me know that where we sleep, the gas was in this room too. It is by the grace of God that we are still alive and the house did not blow up. I called the furnace repair man and he was at our house the next morning. Sure enough there were parts that had to be replaced including the gas valve. If I smell gas in the future, I will immediately pull out my Techamor Y201 Portable Methane Propane Combustible Natural Gas Leak Sniffer Detector. I cannot believe I let this go as long as I did. I know what a gas leak can do. I lived a few miles from a house that had a gas leak. It was a beautiful home and one night it blew that house up and not one brick was still standing. Thank God no one was home at the time. This product was well worth the INVESTMENT we made and the price was reasonable. Don't do like I did and second guess, it could result in a tragedy. Even if you do not smell gas now, it is worth it to have on hand in the future just in case you do!!! We are very happy with this product and grateful we are still alive.

Nicely packaged (attractive, well made box & a nice drawstring storage bag), clear well written instructions, and easy to use, plus they extend the 1 year warranty to 2 years if you register the product. It's exactly as pictured on Amazon. 4 Stars ONLY because we've only used it for less than an hour. Otherwise, based on what we've seen and on using it to accurately detect a known gas leak, it deserves 5 stars based on performance, functionality, instructions and packaging. And of course price.A week or so ago we thought we detected a faint gas odor by a water heater in a well ventilated outdoor cabinet at our cabin. This was a perfect opportunity to buy a gas leak detector, test it's performance and determine how serious our leak was. (Yes, we're replacing the water heater ASAP). We were able to detect the origin of the leak, how far from the origin we could detect gas and how quickly the concentration of gas diminished.Function - both light and sound indications of the presence of gas. After about a 10 second warm-up, you adjust the sensitivity in "clean air" to set a minimum detection threshold. The lights and sound indicate relative amount of gas present and, if they max out, you can decrease the sensitivity. Since it doesn't give a numerical reading of parts per million (ppm), the realistic benefit of this is to give you an indication of how serious the leak may be. The more you have to reduce the sensitivity, the worse the leak. This might be especially useful when detecting how widespread and strong the leak may be. The 12" wand is especially helpful - we used it to poke around and into our gas stove to make sure it had no leaks (none detected).What would be nice to have - nothing more if your goal is to know if you have a leak, where it is and, if so, how relatively strong it is. If, however, you are a technician who needs to know the ppm, this wouldn't be fully useful for you.Bottom Line - perfect for our needs. If it continues to work so well I should have given it a full 5 stars.
