Nice energy-efficient light but long-term reliability question
We bought 5 of these lighting units for a large, fairly dark kitchen with a low ceiling in February 2012. They are not the most stylish of lighting units, but they give an excellent bright light, although the 2D lamps do gradually get dimmer over time. Compared with the 5 x 100 watt lamps they replaced, the energy saving has been very impressive, with a dramatic effect on our electricity bill (they are in operation for many hours every day during the winter months, and one is often left on overnight as a nightlight). All but one of the original lamps has now failed, but it was over 2 years before the first of the originals failed. Sadly, some of the replacement 2D lamps purchased via Amazon have not lasted so well, failing a long way short of the claimed 10,000 hours life. When buying replacement lamps it is important to purchase lamps with the same colour temperature rating, as the difference between 3500k and 4000k is quite noticeable, especially if you have more than one lighting unit in the same room. One seller listed their lamps as 3,500k but supplied 4,000k, which give a much colder light. My main reason for writing this review and only giving 3 stars is that one of the units recently failed completely. We were away at the time, but according to our daughter there was a blue flash when she turned the light on, followed by a crackling noise, and the light did not come on. On inspection, the electronic ballast (starter unit) had failed, melting some of its plastic casing. I have been unable to find anyone in the UK who can supply replacement electronic ballasts which fit the Eterna units - if anyone knows otherwise it would be helpful if they could post the information here. We have therefore had to replace the entire unit in order to get a functioning lamp that matches the others.

Brilliant Lighting
Review Updates:2011-11-22 - elec. rate/kWh changed from 10p to 12p for cost estimation2011-11-08 - updated with kitchen illumination measurement2011-11-14 - see update at the end on diffuser quality-----------------------------------------------------------This lighting replaced energy guzzling 3x50W kitchen spotlights we inherited from previous owners. The lighting lumen exceeds what we had with the spotlights and also soft and pleasant with its opal diffuser. As a previous reviewer indicated, I was tempted to order a larger wattage lamp (since 28W didn't seem sufficient) but now having seen the product first-hand, the 28W lamp included is quite adequate. By product's own description, the 28W lamp gives as much light as 2x60W which sounds about right.Update [2011-11-08]:I put my recently acquired little toy, the High Quality Professional Mastech Digital Illuminance light Meter LX1330B 200000 Lux Luxmeter, to work if the 28W lamp indeed gives sufficient light in the kitchen setting. The lighting is fixed on a ceiling height of 2350mm (which may be considered a standard or most common height in the UK). The measurement of light directly under and at kitchen worktop level was around 180 lux, while this reduces to about 80 lux to end of a worktop about 1.4m away from the centre of the lighting. This is quite acceptable but to adhere to a recommended standard -- 240 lux for food preparation area; 160 lux for general kitchen lighting -- it may be necessary to increase the luminous power (for instance with a 38W lamp available on Amazon stock: 2D Lamp 38w 4pin Energy Saving Bulb Lamp 3500k White Long Life). On the other hand, for toilets, bathrooms, and stairs this lighting is more than adequate as you only need under 100 lux. [end of 2011-11-08].Though the lamp is fluorescent, it has none of those downsides that made fluorescent lamps less favourable around the home - slow glowing (hence varying brightness), less natural looking lighting, etc. I was surprised that there is no glow time -- it comes on bright and stays bright. The fitting cannot get any easier; two screws for a light-weight main body to ceiling, and rotating 3-position clips to secure the opal diffuser to the body, the latter only requiring fingers to rotate the clips for opening or closing. My 5-star is for the product and not for the price. If you shop around you will find this lighting slightly cheaper. At the time I ordered, I was unsure what I was getting because there was no sufficient product description other than a one-liner 'Eterna D130 28W Fluorescent Super-Slim Circular Ceiling'. That gave me no confidence to choose others over this seller. Saying that, the prompt delivery (2 days) and reasonable packaging will partly offset my reservation. Here is the missing info you need for this product.- 350mm diameter 80 mm deep- Opal diffuser- 2x60W lighting equivalent- Lamp type: Energy saving square fluorescent lamp-4 pin.- Replacement tube: Here are some amazon stocks: 28W => 28W 2D GR10Q 4 pin Energy Saving Light Bulb; 38W => 2D Lamp 38w 4pin Energy Saving Bulb Lamp 3500k White Long Life; 16W => 16W 2D GR8 2 pin Energy Saving Light bulbThe package photo is also missing on Amazon. This is a 37cmx37cm square box with 10cm depth, yellow/white in colour, with "28W Fluorescent Circular - White" written on it.As for the product, this is a lighting that every kitchen (perhaps bathrooms too) should have when energy price is now the nation's worry.Assuming that you're replacing a 100W bulb with this light (a conservative estimate - I'm replacing a total of 150W spotlights), and on average using the kitchen light for 6 hrs/day, then the yearly saving estimate at 12p per kWh electricity (again a conservative estimate!) would be:(100-28 W) x (6 x 365 h) x (12p/kWh) x (1kWh/1000Wh) x (1£/100p) = £18.92It means this lighting will pay for itself in under 2 years (and have a low running cost thereafter!). This is not even taking account of hidden costs (or hidden savings, depending on how you see it), such as expensive replacements -- for instance, I've observed the spotlights burn out in just a few months time and not that cheap to replace! - while energy saving bulbs tend to have longer life. You can scale up or down based on the actual bulb you're replacing (assumed here 100W), how long your light stays on per day (assumed 6 hours ), or electricity cost (12p/kWh), but the fact remains that the saving is significant. As a disclaimer, the above is purely based on manufacturer published data, for instance, I cannot ascertain the lamp energy consumption to be precisely 28W or it staying constant. You get what I am trying to say - this is not a laboratory quality recommendation but gives you a general idea.[2011-11-14 - update]:I have had more of these lights delivered and noticed cracks on the rim of the diffuser. This indicated to me that the diffuser is a cheap quality brittle plastic that can easily crack or get chipped. So, handle with care. In situ looks nice and does the job but if dropped or knocked (a possibility during installation) it could disappoint. [end of 2011-11-14 update].Do you need more convincing? Buy it, and do your part to save the planet!

Eterna ceiling light
This item was bought to replace an old circular light in my office. I'd read some of the negative comments about it, but it seemed to fit the bill. It arrived very quickly from Amazon, well packaged and in a perfect state. Fitting was very easy and the light it gives out is certainly bright enough for my small office. True the plastic cover is a little on the flimsy side, but once it's up that's of little relevance. It remains to be seen what life it has, but If I do experience an early failure I will update my review.Update: 17/08/2015. Have now had this light for over twelve months and the light tube gave out about a week ago. Replacement fitted, and it's good to go again.

Absolute Rubbish !
I purchased 2 of these about a year ago for my kitchen, great bright light and was quite happy...then a few months later one started to flicker on and off, but came back on if you tapped it.Then purchased a 3rd one, which lasted a week before completely dying. A few days after this the other kitchen one would switch on and then immediately switch itself off. All accompanied by a loud buzzing. At £30 each i would expect them to last quite a while.Have made complaint to Eterna themselves, but havent had a response yet.

It was good while it lasted!
I bought this item just over a year ago. It worked fine until last week when it started to flicker on and off. Eventually it stopped working all together. I assumed it was the bulb and so bought a replacement. Unfortunately it wasn't and so had to get an electrician out who advised that the light fitting had packed up! Unfortunately the fitting was only guaranteed for 12 months! I don't know about anyone else but I expect a light fitting to last longer than that. One very disappointed customer.
