An enjoyable film
I read the book years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that a film had been made. I'll have to talk about the mechanics first as there were a couple of things which annoyed me. First and foremost -- there are no subtitles (important for me as I work anti-social hours and I don't want to disturb my neighbours). The other main thing that grated on me was they cut the bit about language change out -- if you go back 700 years, you'd need a translator to communicate with English people let alone anyone else. That aside, I did enjoy the film immensely. I'm a romantic at heart so I was bound to enjoy it. There were some changes that I liked... The simplification of the story worked well.I know you should start a review with the plot but I found it easier to write this one this way round:The plot is that an archeological dig a note is found from the expedition leader after he goes to visit the company funding them. The note is 650 years old!! They go off to visit their benefactors to discover that they've invented a time machine and the archeaologists are sent back in time to rescue him.In summary: it was a good time-travel film but the story it tells is a simplified version of Crichton's book. Fans of the book may find it a bit over-simplified.

below effect
arrived in prompt time. bought to rewatch and not seen for years, wanted get a idea what the plot or supposed story might gave been, a team of archaeologists digging up a medieval site in france when out if the blue there professor suddenly vanishes, now they must set about on a touch and go risky journey to rescue him, active romp with some time travel twists, but script us wooden, action adventure, got the impression feels something missed from this movie, lacking spark, acting is drab, lacklustre taking in account the cast in show i would expect more, it seemed far too rushed in scenes, didnt tue together, not put right, ive never read the book to this film, maybe that was better than this.

' Timeline ' a Good Effort
Rather than repeating the plot line I will pass general comments. It was only after watching ' Timeline ' was I aware that it was Directed by ' Richard Donner ' { think Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut }Timeline's has a Claimed budget of $ 80,000,000 although this may be widely inaccurate. You really have to watch it twice as it grows on you and it does have some very interesting extras. The Trebuchet Scenes make up for any plot holes . { and ' Night Arrows ' is a very interesting concept }By the way there was a substance that was called 'Greek fire' which may have been a 'thermite-like' reaction, possibly involving a quicklime or similar compound. Its the only DVD I know where I ended up supporting the French against the English. All in all its a enjoyable dvd.

R.I.P RICHARD DONNER
is a 2003 American science fiction adventure film directed by Richard Donner and starring Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, and Anna Friel. Based on Michael Crichton's 1999 novel of the same name, the screenplay concerns a team of present-day archaeology and history students who are sent back in time to medieval France, to rescue their professor from the middle of a battle.Jerry Goldsmith composed the original score, which would have been his last before his death in 2004 (his actual last score was Looney Tunes: Back in Action), but it was replaced with a new score by Brian Tyler after the first cut was re-edited and Goldsmith's increasing health problems prevented him from continuing. The film was poorly received by critics and bombed at the box office, losing an estimated $49 million.

Slick adaptation of the original novel
Virtually Maria (Virtual Trilogy) As a great fan of the sadly lamented Micheal Crichton, who has written a trilogy of time travel books of my own, I would recommend this DVD as a slick and entertaining adaptation of the original novel.OK - there isn't the attention to detail and the intricately woven technical explanation that made Crichton's novel so believable that you felt you could go out and build a time machine of your own out of a fax machine and a laser pointer. But hey, this is Hollywood! The techno-babble is plausible enough, the battle scenes are fantastic, the bad guys are wonderful and the extras on the DVD - particularly the documentary narrated by Richard Donner on how the movie was made - are extremely good and well worth the money. It's not quite Jurassic Park, but it's a good movie and a great way to spend an evening with a cold beer and a hot pizza.
