An old book for a new Age of Anxiety
This Third Edition (2014) of Paul Tillich's 1952 book, The Courage To Be, now under review, has a new introduction by Harvey Cox, a Professor at Harvard University (himself a well-known and read author). Professor Cox's introduction seeks to place the book within its original context, that is, the theological post-fundamentalism conversation that developed around the middle of the 20th century.Paul Tillich's book was a personal narrative as much as it was for a wider readership. It is not surprising, therefore, that it had a wide appeal with a general readership, as well as for the theologically and philosophically inclined. Many students of the past, as well as those coming to Tillich in the present, would gladly testify to its personal value. The book delineates Tillich's struggles with the existential question (as relevant now as it was then) of "how we may overcome the demoralising effects, on the individual and society, of our Age of Anxiety”.It is to be recognised that the anxiety of Tillich's generation had, amongst other events (including and especially, the atomic bombing of Japan) been encouraged by two World Wars. Post-World War 2 civilisation had to live with a Damocles Sword presented by this history. Discussing history, theology, psychology, and what this reviewer would call “personhood”, Tillich steadily explores the depths, dilemmas, and despair of humanity as he searches for the answers to the wide-ranging anxieties of 20th century humanity. My own copy of the 1st edition of this book, initially read during theological college years in the late 1960's, is widely thumbed and heavily underlined. I suspect, from memories of the discussion of this book – amongst the general student population, as well as students of theology/philosophy – that there were many copies that exhibit the same signs of use. This new edition, an attractive paperback in a pleasing format, comes like a gift from the past that has a continuing relevance for the present, and, with a view to contemporary world events, also for the future. As stated by Tom F. Driver, the Paul J. Tillich Professor of Theology and Culture Emeritus, Union Theological Seminary, New York, “This book is a classic awaiting re-discovery by a new generation.”It is published by Yale University Press, is reasonably priced, and readily available. Highly recommended.

This writing, above all others.
A wonderful book, my 2nd copy. Professor Tillich's message helps an individual regain his 'courage to be' - so desperately needed within each of us, as we struggle to meet Life's endless challenges.Agnostics or atheists will still find this an inspiring read.
