Mortal Kombat (1995) Lord Rayden (Christopher Lambert) handpicks three martial artists -- federal agent Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson), Shaolin monk Lui Kang (Robin Shou) and action movie sensation Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) -- and mentors them. After intense training, Rayden transports the trio to Outworld, the site of an inter-dimensional fighting tournament. There, the three humans must defeat the demonic warriors of the evil Shang Sung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) -- or allow Sung to take over the Earth. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) The battle for humanity continues as the vile Outworlders unveil a terrifying plot for revenge! In defiance of the Elder Lords, the evil Shao Kahn (Brian Thompson) is determined to unleash Hell on Earth -- and mankind's only hope for survival is the mighty martial arts warrior Liu Kang (Robin Shou) and his ferocious fighting friends!

Newline has a new compnay motto: "F@#$ the fans."
Mortal Kombat is actually a decent movie, the one star isn't for that. No, it's for the half-assed DVD production. Seriously. My 20 year old, obsolete, laserdisc player has better picture, sound, and special features. This DVD was apparently produced via Newline giving a film school intern 2 full-screen VHS tapes of the movie and then telling them to "put this on a DVD". What, you couldn't even dig up the Letterboxed DVDs that preceded this? It even says "Widescreen" on the jacket. Seems the intern didn't get that memo. Maybe Newline just wanted to go out of their way to show their contempt for the fans of this film.Other lazy studios would have just put the 2 already produced DVDs in one case with new artwork, seems that Newline can't even accomplish that.In any case, I'm really sick of the lack of respect that studios have for their customers. Well F@#$ you too, NewLine.

I love me my Mortal Kombat
It's a good movie, and no, the animation isn't great (especially MK Annihilation), but it's an older movie too. I seem to recall at the time we were pretty impressed by the animation, after all it was 1995/97. It's premise is fairly along the same lines for the games (though there are several MKII game references in the movie), and it is pretty predictable (it's based on a fighting video game, you want hard core story, this is not necessarily the right genre) and it's an enjoyable watch. Nothing epic, obviously. The only downside is that MK:A definitely was no where near as good at MK, in both visuals, plotline (they seemed to be all over the place), and acting. I really wish they had gotten Christopher Lambert again for Raiden, and I thought Bridgette Wilson played a better (more stoic, I'm tough girl) Sonya than Sandra Hess. Still, every now and again you want to watch the other one (ok I do at least), so I'm glad I got the 2 pack for that circumstance.

Wow!
I can sadly/proudly say that I saw both of these movies in theaters when they came out in the 90s. No, they arent very good and yes, almost all of the characters change between the first and the second movie (the funniest is Jax... they basically found a black guy who looks nothing like the Jax from the first movie). The Raiden in the second movie looks almost identical to the first movie's Raiden, even though they are played by different actors!Anyway, these are basically the movie version of Rebecca Black -- they are so awful that they're wonderful. The acting is TERRIBLE, the plots make almost no sense, and just about nothing is explained. The special effects are hilariously bad too. However, fans of mortal kombat will love these movies for how cheesy they are. I know I did.

Not true to the games (Spoiler Alert)
If you're like me, you are a die hard fan of the Mortal Kombat games. With spine ripping, acid spewing, fire throwing fighters kicking ass for good or evil, what's not to love? These movies were dulled down for a much broader audience. The rating says it all, PG-13! Nothing in the Mortal Kombat world of media should ever be appropriate for a 13 year old. These movies are more about the spiritual nature around the series such as how Mortal Kombat is not about death but about the preservation of life. The entire story was warped. Johnny Cage isn't a media whore, Sonya doesn't even act like her special forces counterpart, Liu Kang is a whiny little bitch that somehow becomes insanely strong through a few matches. Rain gets killed before he can even be shown fighting and there are very few instances where the special moves that attracted so many (along with the fatalities) are even used, oh and did I mention Liu Kang's animality is a dragon that tries to use martial arts against Shao Kahn's hydra form (I know right, the hell)?

Mortal Kombat: Remastered (Double Feature)
This review is based on the Mortal Kombat Double Feature featuring Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat Annihilation films. The review covers only the first film to demonstrate some of the changes from its original theatrical and DVD release in the '90s.Mortal Kombat---------------------------------The first film appears to have been completely remastered with several new improvements and quality enhancements that make this version of the film superior in the original theatrical and DVD releases:- Clearer, sharper images- Brighter and truer colors- Crispier and clear audio- More aesthetically pleasing- More realistic- More true to the video games story and scenery- Different angles- Extended scenes and more complete fightsSome differences in this version (mostly extended scenes):- The DVD cover for this film is more energetic and features a fiery-red background than its original black background.- You see Shang Tsung walk away with the Kombatants following after Sonya follows Tsung.- The Cage vs Goro scene is extended and enhanced - you see Goro grabbing the ledge behind Johnny and even running after Johnny (mainly his shadow). Before Johnny kicks Goro to his death, you can make out Goro saying "help" under a growl.- In the Goro vs Art fight, it's easier to notice Goro giving his fighting stance, praying as he hold Art for Tsung to take his soul.- Dialogue scenes are often shown in wide-angle shots, grabbing attention to the awesome backgrounds and scenery the first releases failed to do.- Different angles help viewers understand which scenery as it relates to the games the characters are in.- The portal in the Warrior Shrine is easier to spot during Raiden's discussion of each Kombatant's fears.- The inside of the Examiner Master Boyd is holding is perfectly clear to reveal a crossword puzzle right before the camera pans up from over his shoulder.- Before the Reptile vs Liu Kang Fight: Before Liu and Cage into Outworld, the Reptile creatin runs into the portal, emphasizing the storyline of Reptile following orders from Tsung to prevent Kitana from befriending them. Also this fight is extended.- A lot more sounds have been added throughout the film: In Reptile's fight as human Reptile, Reptile grunts a lot and adopts more reptilian-like voices (almost like JP Dinosaurs). In the end of the film, you can hear the voices of the souls as they leave Tsung and the film makes use of "Bruce Lee" grunts, meaning a lot of the grunts do not match the characters' lips.- Other noticeable differences: When all the fighters are walking to the Tsung's castle from the island, you see Liu kang standing still and also someone walking up the stairs of the castle in the background - all in one shot. It would appear the Pit 2 made an appearance as the scene where Sonya says she wants to get to the bottom of this, leaving the last fight to happen on Pit I, though with major improvements since the first video game. The Shaolin Temple looks like it served as a model for Shao Kahn's castle. You can also make out the "MK1 Shang Tsung" face in the face that appears above Tsung after he says "It has begun." When the souls are leaving Shao Kahn's castle, it resembles the ending from MK3, only it takes place at the castle in Outworld and not in a city.- The Kombat code given was: Question mark, Goro, 4, Question mark, Goro, Dragon logo. This can be entered in MK3.- While this was in the original version, watch the film all the way through. At the New Line Cinema logo at the end you'll hear "Excellent. Flawless Victory" by MK2's Shao Kahn. These would all serve as pros and completely changed the photography and feel of the film for the better. The only cons I have is the extended footage makes the film more slow-paced but at the same time a more realistic and humanistic feel (especially Scorpion struggling to get up throughout his fight, which presented him more like a human than a ghostly figure). Also, the color correction added more blue throughout the film, from inside the throne room to even outside on the island.
