Mostly fertilizer to boost established lawns
I ordered this 20 lb bag of Sunday Sun and Shade seed to help my lawn regrow. I’ve been pulling moss and clover so I need something to help the grass fill in the spots. The listing photo of the bag contents seems pretty accurate. There is lots of pelletized chemical material and a bit of grass seed. The product is meant to be applied to an actively growing lawn, not just spread in bare patches. There’s an easy-open notch on the bag but it doesn’t tear across nicely. I’d recommend scissors for sure. It’s summer so it’s not the optimal temperature for germination right now (works best when outside temperatures are 60-75F), but I wanted to get an idea of how well it worked. I didn’t want to use it on my whole lawn in these temperatures but I applied some to two bare patches and sprinkled some in a couple of pots just to see what the germination would be like in different sun/shade/temperature scenarios. The recommended rate of 10 lb per 1500 square feet is pretty sparse in my opinion, even in actively growing lawn. I calculated the amount of product that should be applied to the surface area of the pots and it was barely more than a half gram for a 6” diameter pot. My scale wouldn’t even measure that small of an amount. The best approximation is a few granules. So in order to be able to observe germination I did apply more than recommended. In one pot I sprinkled about 10x the recommendation and in the other about 30x the recommendation (see photos.) The two bare patches got somewhere in between these amounts. One pot is on the counter indoors where the temperature should be better for seed germination, and one pot is outside in partial sun, partial shade. One bare patch is mostly in the shade and gets water every once in a while. The other gets watered thoroughly every morning and is in partial sun, partial shade. The listing says there will be ‘visible improvements in just 8-21 days.’ 5 days after planting, we saw some grass seeds germinating in the pot that is inside on the counter, in more ideal conditions. The next day we saw more germinating in the inside pot and saw the first seeds germinating in the outside pot. It has now been 18 days since planting. The pots are definitely growing new healthy looking grass (see photos, but remember these are planted at 10x and 30x the recommended rate!) With the bare patches in the lawn, it’s difficult to tell what may be the original grass regrowing or the Sunday seeds sprouting. In established lawns I’m pretty sure that most of the improvement comes from the fertilizer. But, having a little grass seed in there will probably help in areas of lawn that are a little more bare and just need some assistance. In bare areas you probably need a higher grass seed rate if you are looking to fill in bare patches.

Instructions don't tell you to add soil or peat moss to help germination for covering bare spots
I specifically got this to shore up some bare spots in my front and back lawn. I did watch a bunch of videos on how to grow grass in bare spots and all of them mentioned needing to add some soil or peat moss to help with germination. As a gardener, I'm familiar with working with growing seeds in peat moss or coconut coir, but for some one who is just looking to reseed a lawn, it's not instinctive to know this. There are two kinds of fescue grass in this mix - tall and fine. The tall fescue takes a lot longer to germinate than the fine one. So far, I've watered twice a day-- in the morning and in the evening. In warmer climates, you might even want to add a third watering. It's been blazing hot in August as I write this, so it can be a challenge to keep the seeds moist, but that's where the peat moss comes in. You must keep the areas moist for 2-3 weeks to get effective growth. The fertilizer pellets make it a lot easier to see where I have spread the seed and in a uniform manner. I appreciate this seed mix having the fertilizer so that I have to buy a separate fertilizer.I made the mistake of not looking at the label and seeing that this is more for Northern and transitional areas. I actually live in a warm climate--bad on me, but I'm assiduously watering the bare spots.

Fertilizer with seed
I ordered this to try to fill in a few bare spots on my lawn. It looks like there is a lot of fertilizer here and some seed, but mostly fertilizer. The bag ripped at an odd angle and I was planning on saving some of this to re-seed later, but I'm not sure how to store it because of the rip and now the bag doesn't really work. Too bad it isn't resealable. I seeded a few weeks again and didn't notice too much new growth. It has been pretty dry, so that could certainly be part of the issue.

Sunday Sun & Shade Grass Seed Mixture with Fertilizer and Soil Improvers without Insecticide
In the Fall of the year it's a good time to give my lawn a helping hand to help revitalize it after the heat of Summer. As the temperature begins to drop, grass seed germinates more readily.I normally choose a mixture of annual grass seed which sprouts quickly, combined with perennial grass seed like Kentucky Bluegrass and perennial ryegrass which continues to grow next year, too.The limestone and gypsum in this mixture helps raise the pH to help the newly sprouting grass seed to utilize nutrients in the soil, while the nitrogen and iron feeds the lawn to help it green up.The ingredients in this Sun and Shade grass seed mixture are just what my lawn is looking for.It doesn't include any pesticides, either, which I prefer since I'm using well water and don't want pesticides in my environment.I like the idea of having everything needed in one lawn mixture - it makes less work for me!Sunday’s Sun & Shade Seed + Feed has just what I need: grass seed like fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass combined with limestone and gypsum to raise the pH. The added slow-release nitrogen and iron feeds the lawn, helping it green up beautifully without any pesticides - and the thicker the grass grows, the fewer weeds I have to contend with! The convenience of having everything in one mixture is perfect for year-round lawn care and has definitely saved me some steps this fall. Highly Recommend!

So far so good for our lawn
I've been using some of Sunday's other lawn fertilizer products so I wanted to try seed to fill in some patchy areas and so far this has been effective so long as you follow the directions. This one bag covers a pretty large area as well so I should be good for a long time.I'm happy with the grass that's come in after applying it.

Sprouted quickly
Looks to be an even mixture both in ratio of each component and especially in granule/seed size. Ran through a walk behind seed spreader easily. I didn't get anywhere near the coverage implied. For the price, I would only recommend this to patch or supplement an already established lawn. Once seeded, this mix sprouted quickly. Up came little soft blades that were thin but soft and a beautiful shade of green.
