The pain of 'heartburn' associated with indigestion is caused by the acid produced in the stomach being forced up into the oesophagus where it is not meant to be. Once it is there it causes inflammation and pain. The old fashioned treatment was an 'antacid' which aimed to neutralize the acid in the stomach. This works quite well and very quickly. The downside is that it is short term as the stomach senses low acid levels and rapidly produces more. This is known as 'bounce back'.The newer drugs, of which Esomeprazole is one, work differently. They target the cells in the stomach which produce acid and effectively turn them off. The result is vastly reduced acid in the stomach. Taken daily they can maintain that low level. Although some of the stomach contents can still enter the oesophagus the lack of acid results in much less inflammation and allows any present to heal. This will reduce or eliminate the pain of heartburn.Because of this mode of action these drugs are much more effective and very suitable for extended use. (Continuing symptoms should be checked by a doctor.) However they do not and can not provide immediate relief. It will be two to three days for significant effect and is sometimes longer. They should be taken daily until the pain has gone.The dose of the Perrigo Esomeprazole is 20 mg which is at the lower end of what can be prescribed but should be more than adequate.In summary, these capsules provide a very effective treatment for heartburn and acid reflux over a 24 hour period. They cannot provide instant relief. (For this use an 'antacid' which can be taken in addition until the full effect of Esomeprazole is reached.) and can take a few days to reach maximum effect.

I usually use Omeprazole, and this was my first time trying Esomeprazole - for me, it works just as well!I do find this seller on the expensive side though - the same product can be had for almost half the price by other Amazon sellers.

I suffer with acid alot so i need fast acting medicines, these say can take 2-3 days to work- i didnt notice any change after using- maybe even the acid felt worse.They are not great for me but glad i tried them as im always looking for something to help with the pain.Had no irritation or side affects so would still recommend trying as everyone finds different remedies.
