Very nice mid-range monitor with some odd design choices
I bought this partially for the KVM feature, but mostly after a really bad experience with Dell monitors (they used to be great but the last one I bought was really obnoxiously, headache-inducing bad).Initially, it produced really weird colours and I had to run Apple's calibration utility multiple times before I was happy with it, but once that was done, the colour reproduction was great. The surface lighting is very even and the blacks are nice and deep for an LCD display (they're never totally perfect due to how LCD panels work, but this was pretty close). The controls are pretty nice, with a couple of buttons and a joystick on the back of the monitor for controlling its functions. I much prefer that to buttons alone where you can get quickly confused if you're pressing the right button or not, and the monitor's menus seem to be fairly sensibly arranged. There's also a "hotkey puck" provided, which I can see being useful for people who may need to change the monitor's configuration frequently, but I didn't find it all that useful and just haven't bothered with it. It's not a bad idea, just not something I can make much use of.The KVM feature means I can easily switch between my USB-C/Thunderbolt-enabled personal laptop and the legacy USB/HDMI laptop provided by work without a whole lot of hassle. There are even Picture in Picture and Picture By Picture modes as well, but they feel a bit gimmocky and not of much use in the real world. it did mean running a load of cables from the monitor though. That's not the monitor's fault, it's just the facts when dealing with a machine where video and data are different connectors and require both a USB and a HDMI cable for the KVM functionality to work (plus all the input devices that are now connected to the monitor). So I'm not going to fault the monitor for that. One thing I will fault it for though is the ridiculous chin it has running along the bottom, it would give Jay Leno an inferiority complex! I also don't see any need for it being there, as I know the top-end version of this monitor doesn't have a chin, so it must have been purely a design choice. Honestly it's a bad one. It looks really out of place.Additionally, whilst the monitor does have on-board speakers, they can hardly be described as hi-fi. They're really tinny and not very pleasant to listen to. All I can say for them is that they're better than nothing, and just about good enough for video conferencing. There's software you can install, Display Pilot, that's supposed to support some additional functionality, However, it just seemed to spam my monitor's colour profile list, and the one function I wanted it for (automatic re-orientation of the display when you mode from landacape to portrait) didn't seem to work. It could be that it's because I've put the monitor on a VESA arm instead of using the supplied stand, but I didn't feel much urge to experiment with that. It's functionality I can live without.Overall, very happy with this monitor so far, lets just hope it doesn't develop the annoying traits that its predecessor did that made me ditch Dell.
