Beautifully illustrated, nice rhymes & heartwarming story
Love this story. Great for preschoolers. Lovely underlying theme of encouraging empathy. Lighthearted fun read. Kids can recognize themselves & others in this. A grumpy baby kangaroo won't smile . His mother does lots of things to get him to smile to no avail. He's overall in a bad mood but won,t snap out . Eventually she does something which finally gets the smile back. It helps present in a nice simplistic way The concept that we can just sometimes feel generally in a bad mood , when everything looks negative. But we can get out of that mood. This would be hard to explain to a preschooler but the book does it in a delightfully positive way.

Got this through in the post today and already read it - now ordered others by the same author. Their other book, ouch in my pouch has been a favourite for years and we read over and over and this is just as lovely

It's lovely when your child smiles
It's lovely when your child smiles. This is one of my 2-almost-3-year-old's favourite bedtime stories at the moment. The story is about Roo the child Kangaroo who is grumpy and his mother is trying to get him to smile. But he doesn't, not until the end of the story of course. The pictures are quality throughout and always contain Roo and his mum, plus a duck, mouse, and a bee who just like following them around. My daughter likes to pretend she doesn't want to smile throughout too, until the end when she does her fake smile - screwing up her eyes and lips to make a smile. It is very funny. Then she will read the story on her own, mixing her own words with the bits she can remember from the book. It's enough to make you smile.

Too much focus on being grumpy and not enough on the smile
There is far too much focus on being grumpy and not enough on the smile, you get the last page where the kangaroo finally smiles, and only because they fell in the mud! So is just an ok book for me.
