Will this help with making mead?

It's not essential but can be a handy tool. I have made many different meads and haven't used it yet but I have it on stand by incase the recipe calls for it.

will this help cider brewing?

Tannins are naturally present in apples and provide astringency to cider. It depends on apple varieties if these have high tannin they need not e added but if apples have low tannin these are added to give astringency to cider. In principle, tannins do not help brewing.

As it's a wine making ingredient, I would have thought it's pretty obvious that it can be ingested. But it's not advisable to drink large amounts of tannin, as it can have a negative affect on the body. (Google it)
