The Artist's Guide to Drawing Realistic Animals

I don't particularly understand the low ratings for this book; It has great drawings, not the loose chaotic scribbles you see in many other animal drawing books. It's well made with high quality paper, offering full color reference images for each one of its guides, in addition to tips, a step-by-step guide on how to draw them, and even a bit of information about the animal that will help with drawing them. Since it was made in 2006, it is presented in a more modern manner, and won't feel like the old-of-date, scratchy-papered, black-and-white-with-yellowing-pages texts that schools often provide, and therefore provides a more casual and entertaining experience. It has a nice array of animals, with large sections for the most popular animals (ex: the cat family, the dog family) and smaller sections for the more "out-there" animals, like giraffes and owls. The only downside I can see here is the lack of anatomical information; however, this is not advertised as an anatomy book. Also, this is not a book for beginners. It assumes you already have a basic grasp of drawing, but would like more practice in the drawing of animals. Most of the step-by-steps provide only 3 images: the very basic structure of the animal, followed by a loose guide on where the details should go, and a finished drawing. As I've said, for anyone who has a good drawing background, this should be sufficient, but beginners are better off looking elsewhere.

This book help me get Ideals, and brush up on my drawings. Easy to understand, and for beginners awesome way to learn to draw animals

Sent this to my son who is out of state. His drawings got so much better with the help of this book!

WIsh it gave lots more very basic info and more steps - he jumps too fast between steps so you don't know how to get from one to the next as there need to be more steps. But it still is a lovely, helpful book and I will use it more when I get a bit better. Wonderful for intermediate artists. As a beginner I find it gorgeous, too difficult for me without more step breakdown but I still think it is one of the best animal drawing books out there and very nicely written too - very helpful and fun and just wonderful drawings!

Bought this book for my brother to give to him on his B day. He has always loved drawing but hasn't had much training or looked into many books to help improve his skills. This book is very thick, stuffed with many easy to follow breakdowns on how to properly and easily sketch your favorite animals. He does love to draw nature and animals specifically so this was a HOME RUN purchase! Now he can draw correctly step by step instead of arbitrarily from his memory or just winging it.

This man is so thorough with what he finds out about the animals before he evens begins to watch or sketch them. I love his snippets called artist’s secrets and animal secrets. I am and have learned so much from how he teaches. My sketches have definitely improved because of the things I have learned.

Got this book as reference for my two boys, who are into drawing. The book looks good, as I mentioned in the tittle. Wether if the kids are using it … well, that’s another story… that I’m sure are familiar with
