Lisle 22800 Wheel Stud Installer

After struggling to put one stud in a new axle, I decided to give this a try. It was a definite game changer. Installed the other 9 studs w/o issue. I did put the studs in the freezer overnite & used lots of grease on the tool, as was suggested by other users. I have a pretty impressive impact, so had to be careful to stop when it bottomed out.

Read the one star reviews I decided to purchase two of this product. I read on another review where they used anti-sieze on the stud and tool. So I did that too. I was installing larger 1/2” studs in place of my OEM 7/16. I made SURE that the knurl was the same size for both studs. This is very important!!! Otherwise you will need to drill your flanges to the new larger size. So I got out my impact drill and went to town. I installed 12 new studs without any issues. Tool still looks functional. No new looseness or anything. Was it the anti-seize that help. Don’t know. I have 12 more studs to go for the rear axles, but I don’t foresee any problems. UPDATE 11/3/25- I finally got around to doing my rear axles and this tool handled all additional 12 wheel studs without issue. In this case I had to drill out the original wheel stud holes on the axles. I checked online for the proper sized drill bit. Then purchased a quality industrial grade bit. Trust me it was worth it. You get what you pay for and this bit was $60. It cut through the axle flanges like butter (use cutting oil!!) This stud install tool is still fully functional. I had zero issues while using this tool. I am still going to say using the anti-sieze what a good idea.

THE BEST $20 BUCKS I’VE SPENT IN A LONG TIME!!! I bought six studs and lugs at NAPA and attempted to install them at the lake in the yard. After trying the BS washer/big nut trick and getting four of the six in but not quite all the way I called NAPA where the associate told me they sold me the wrong ones “to long” I knocked them back out and brought them back to get the proper ones (No apology or anything for there mistake) figured now it would be easier. Not even close in fact it seemed worst. Not sure if it was the pounding sun in the 90 degree weather or the fact I was worn out from putting the first four in and out with a breaker bar and a piece of pipe for leverage. Either way it sucked and I got pissed off and ordered this device. I gotta admit I was skeptical when I first seen it. But I followed the instructions and used my impact gun and it worked like a charm. Hell this baby worked better than a charm it took me longer to pull my air hose and gun out and put the truck in the air than actually do the studs. I’ve never had to do wheel studs in my life and I’ve always owned old beaters. I’m not sure if it’s the cheap Chinese metal (junk) or the salt and sand on our roads or both. Either way if you need to replace wheel studs this is your ticket. I used a impact but I’m sure it would be pretty simple with a big ratchet. You don’t need the expensive ones this one works awesome. I said it in the beginning and I’ll say it again this was the best twenty bucks I’ve spent in a long time. Thanks!

The single picture for this wheel stud installer really does not do it justice. What the picture does not show is that there is a bearing race on the back side to reduce friction during installation. I used this tool to replace wheel studs on an 2002 Lexus IS300. The process was pretty straight-forward: Remove the caliper assembly and rotor. Next, drive out the existing wheel studs with a hammer. Finally, install the new wheel studs, I used Doorman, using this tool and an impact wrench until the new studs are seated against the hub. The total job took me about 2 hours per wheel, taking my time and being careful. I tried to do this job originally with just a few washers. The main problem with washers is that they are soft metal and quickly deform under load, especially if you use acorn style lug nuts. In fact, the washer deformed so badly that they destroyed the threads on one of the wheel studs such that I had to order this tool and do the stud over again. Thus, for those that think this tool is unnecessary, I would strongly disagree. This tool installs the wheel studs straight, protects the new threads, and makes the job far faster. Also, if you have acorn style lug nuts, I would say this tool is mandatory.

I’ve replaced many wheel studs on my WRX utilizing a stack of washers and an old lug nut. I decided to give this tool a try when I broke a stud from a cross threaded lug nut from the last guy who installed it on a newly acquired Forester. This tool worked really well. I did have to use 2 flat washers under it in order to get it to sit flat against the hub. I only used a ratchet in an attempt to compare this to the stack of washers method. This seemed to work much better/easier. I may give it a shot with an impact gun the next time to see how durable the tool is. Overall I’d recommend it as it worked very well for me.

This makes really easy install studs

You likely need this even if you don't think so. We recently have 2 newer cars at our house. The old ones used much lower lug-torques @ 65 & 75 Ft-Lbs. Never broke a stud. When we got our newer cars that require 90 Ft-Lbs, I suspected it would be more likely to snap a wheel stud, so after reading so many positive reviews, I bought this one. Within 2 weeks, on the very first time, the wheel stud snapped. Lisle stud installer to the rescue. To some, $17+ might seem excessive for a chunk of round metal. This is a precision, 2-piece tool that must be able to spin freely while being forcefully compressed. Its quality bearings work smoothly and perfectly. Made the job EASY. I saw the youtube vids of people just using an oversized nut. I'll use this tool every time and consider my $17.50 very well spent.

I had to buy studs from Canadian tire to replace the one I broke by over-tightening. Bolt was around 2$ each. To replace all 5, first I tried to remove the brake rotor but it was stuck. So I just hammer the broken one out, exactly in that position. It came out so easy, with a small dollar store hammer ( just to make sure I was not to heavy on the hit) In the back is plenty of clearance after you remove the brake caliper. After I use a bit of grease and the tool to tight the new bolt. It worked so easy, no need to hold the rotor ( it was in neutral to spin all bolts to that location). I did not seat the bolts completely, to stress the bearing of the tool, since I tight the wheel nuts much harder. Overall nice job using the tool.
