Do i have to have the switch display coming through the TV to use this? Or can i have it work on the handheld mode?

Hello. You can use it either way, For example; TV play with the Switch docked, or Handheld mode for remote play. Hope this helps.

I left it plugged in to my switch for a few days and now it wont come on. Has anyone had this problem?

Have yiu tried putting a pin into the little hole on back of controller...that resets it. Otherwise on 5he amazon page there is a contact service direct to diswoe...I had a minor issue and they resolved my problem very quickly ...they respond in 24 hours normally. Great little controllers
