Bach: Goldberg Variations

This review is for the vinyl version of Angela Hewitt’s recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations issued recently on the Hyperion label.First off, her playing here is outstanding and has widely, and quite rightly, received much praise. That said my review here concerns the vinyl version of this recording and not the excellent CD.In this version the remastering is really well done and, in my opinion, sounds better than the CD. It enhances the lovely tone of the Fazioli instrument that Ms Hewitt plays on, as well as capturing the quite natural sounding acoustic of the hall in which she plays, allowing the piano to breathe. Also captured well are the many subtleties of her playing.Unfortunately, the vinyl is not pressed well by the French manufacturer. I have had to send back to Amazon two copies of the record, both exhibiting, on separate tracks, what appears to be some kind of groove damage. This is most disappointing as it is a record I was looking forward to owning and keeping.In all honesty my experience makes me hesitate to order more records from Hyperion’s new venture into classical vinyl. Be warned if you are interested in buying.

The best rendition of this wonderful piece. Great sounding CD.

これはまさに　バッハのピアノ奏法のお手本を聴いている感じです　ゴルドベルクはカタログによると三種て出ていますがこのハイペリオン盤は演奏・録音ともにベストでしょう　フーガの技法とともに晩年のニコラーエワのベスト盤と感じます　テンポ設定　アーティキュレーションの工夫が　ヒューイットを超えてい流と感じました

When I was researching some piano pieces on youtube with various pianists to find a good interpretation and role model for my piano student, I came casually along Tatjana Nikolajewa and fell in love with her piano playing style. When she plays J. S. Bach she seems to be looking directly up to Bach where he is sitting in heaven conducting the angels' choirs and getting the input from him how to play his pieces. I find these Goldberg variations magically seducing to listen and fall into a musical trance where nothing but exciting tones exist. I can understand that Mr. Goldberg would have been healed and taken to sleep easily by listening to this Russian Grandma and magic pianist. Thank you to Tatjana Nikolajewa.

Tatiana Petrovna Nikolaïeva est une compositrice, pianiste russe, née le 4 mai 1924 à Bejitsa (oblast de Briansk). Elle meurt le 22 novembre 1993 à San Francisco. Elle commence à jouer du piano à l'âge de trois ans, elle étudie au Conservatoire Tchaïkovski de Moscou avec Alexandre Goldenweiser et Evgueni Goloubev (en). En 1950, elle remporte le premier prix du Concours International Bach de Leipzig. Lors de ce concours, elle rencontre Dmitri Chostakovitch et devient amie avec lui. C'est elle qui crée 23 décembre 1952 à Leningrad les Vingt-quatre Préludes et Fugues.À partir de 1959, elle devient professeur Conservatoire Tchaïkovski de Moscou où elle succède à son professeur Alexandre Goldenweiser. Parmi ses élèves on peut compter le pianiste russe Nikolaï Louganski.Son répertoire allait de Bach dont elle jouait l'intégralité de la musique composée pour le clavecin à la musique contemporaine. Elle a enregistré plus de 100 disques.Le 13 novembre 1993, au cours d'un récital à San Francisco, elle fait une hémorragie intra-cérébrale. Elle meurt 9 jours plus tard, le 23 novembre 1993. (Source Wikipedia)Cette belle interprétation au tempérament si slave bénéfice d'une confortable prise de sons : beau piano, très délié, basses profondes et généreuses, sans saturation.Excellents tempi qui soulignent un grande maîtrise des jeux : l'aria en 4'02 et la 25 en 7'45 - celle en sol mineur, la plus émouvante... en disent long sur la distorsion de Gould entre 55 et 81 !J'aime particulièrement la une (ici en 1'56) qui est souvent révélatrice du jeu d'ensemble.Je m'étonne que ce disque ne soit pas plus connu.
