what size mattress is recommended as far as thickness?

I ordered the LINENSPA 8 Inch Memory Foam and Innerspring Hybrid Mattress – Twin Mattress when I purchased this bunk bed for my kids. I went with the 8 inch because that still allowed the upper bunk to have the guard rails stick up higher than the mattress so I didn’t worry about the kids rolling off the top bunk at night. Don’t go larger than an 8 inch mattress for the top bunk.

Can a Xl twin mattress fit this bed?

No. We had a Twin XL, 10” thick. This left no protective rail to keep my child from falling out and we had to shove it in there. This means any time you need to change sheets it will be no small task. You’ll have to either remove the mattress (above your head, because it’s a loft bed) to change the sheets or be satisfied with always having untucked sheets hanging off the bed.
