Abandoned Asylums (Jonglez photo books)

A written and historical view of Asylums. It just misses our future care.
The media could not be loaded. This was one of the most enlightening books I have read about the history of asylums. The book captures some of the horrors and some of the benefits of the old asylums. The history of mental health care and especially the asylums is filled with enigmas.Once the asylums closed, it is estimated that 1/3 of the homeless population suffers from schizophrenia—they had no home. Based on the American Psychiatric Association’s website, one in five of prisoners of our expensive prisons are seriously mentally ill.I worked as a clinical psychologist at an older asylum that was originally constructed in 1854. I decided to write an Archie Bunker version of mental health based on my experiences—TWO DAYS AT THE ASYLUM. It was supposed to be just another bizarre novel about the happenings within an asylum. The politically incorrect novel somehow ends with the strong message we must return to the asylums or at least provide therapeutic housing for the severely and persistently mentally ill.

Fascinating story
This tells a fascinating photographic story of people who are largely forgotten by society. Mentally ill, and the conditions they have lived in. A story that needs to be told. Though inpatient psychiatric beds are needed the conditions are not. When the beds are eliminated one thing that can sometimes take their place: jail cells. How tragic.

Thought provoking
The subject is a story all its own. The photos are good, but kind of creepy. And sad. It's very thought provoking.

Great
Intriguing photos coupled with great backstories/historical information. If you want to know more about the nation’s first asylums, this would be a good start.

Fascinating
This is a fascinating book. It looks at old "lunatic asylums", their history and features some excellent photographs of how they look now. There is some text in the book to put the pictures into context. I found it a very interesting and informative book to dip into. It makes you realise how much these places must have changed over time. I give it the full five stars. I have never seen a book like this before.

Hauntingly Beautiful.
Hauntingly beautiful, the images of the derelict institutions have a sadness about them that compels the observer to consider the lives and emotions of their long gone inmates. I found myself trying to imagine how they would have looked when operational and how staff and patients would have gone about their daily routines.Sensitively photographed and beautifully presented. Also, the text emphasises the humanitarian aspirations these insitutions were ffounded on.

A must have!
Evocative photography depicting the silent past, the fate of many unsuspecting victims of an era that really thought they were protecting and helping many afflicted with mental illness as well as some who just didn't conform to social norms.Well written text, informative and concise. The foreword explains the history and expectations of the scientific hierarchy in regards to the buildings, treatments and outcomes.Thought provoking, emotional history in photos. Excellent!
