Can the PiJuice Hat be charged with12 volts?

No, not with 12V. The input voltage range is 4.2-10V according to their docs. You will need some form of regulation to get your 12V system down to this range.

Just assembled a Pi with a tablet running Raspbian. Is there on screen battery level indication of any kind?

I have one, but haven't operated it yet. From one of the PiJuice reviews linked on Github: https://www.recantha.co.uk/blog/?p=17790, there is a battery level indicator. According to this post, install the PiJuice control package using sudo apt-get install pijuice This will install the PiJuice configuration tool that will show you how much juice you have left, whether it’s charging and allows you to configure how the supply and Pi reacts to various events. Hope this was useful.
