More informative than any religion
Personally, I found this book extremely enlightening. I understand that much (if not all) of the book is based on philosophies possibly fueled by hope, after all we don't really know what happens in the after life, or even if there is one. However, this book makes sense. Some here will say that Mr. Chopra is lying - I don't think so. The book is a break down of theories, and I think the author did an amazing job compiling all those theories (including the Bible) and generating a message - that there is an afterlife, that we are indeed aware of our soul, and that we can cultivate the greatness of our soul should we choose to. Yes there is the idea that you "choose" your afterlife, and again some people shun the book for that. However, one must understand that the philosophy here is that we do indeed "choose" our life, how we think, how we see the world, even how we materialize the world - so if we create the world, why not the afterlife as well?Perhaps the only idea that left me a little shaken, was the idea that the afterlife is essentially a level beyond, but co-existent with our own. In other words - everything is here, in front of you, including the afterlife. The problem here, is that when die we become consciousness - and to me (at least to me) it translates into not seeing my family ever again. While Mr. Chopra insists that the "person" is never truly gone, but is actually everywhere...still, deep down I still hope to see my family again as I know them.I value his knowledge, and his ability to tackle this topic with great tact. I must admit that this is the first book I have ever read by Mr. Chopra - and I do believe that it is better to be acquainted with his other works before reading this one. Truly, I took the reading of this book into small steps, because the subject matter, the language, and his ideas are sometimes hard to understand.Do not go into this book expecting yet another interpretation of Biblical verses. Understand that there have been, and always will be other religions, philosophies and ideas outside the Christian belief, before you rank this book a "blasphemy" as some other readers have done. If your brain and soul can only accept Christianity - stick with it, and leave these books to other seekers.

An interesting approach to the question what happens when we die.
As one grows older we often come to the realization of our own mortality. Sometimes we begin to seek out answers to the many questions concerning life and death. This interesting and informative 282 page soft cover (Life after death: the burden of proof by Deepak Chopra) books explores the question of what happens to us when we die.The author is well known for his expertise in Eastern religion and philosophy. In this book combines other belief systems along with some science to make the case for our consciousness surviving physical death. Even though I found his approach intriguing; nevertheless, I am not fully convinced intellectually that he made a case for consciousness surviving after we die. This book is organized into two parts. Part one covers death at the door, the cure for dying, death grants three wishes, escaping the noose, the path to hell, ghosts, the invisible thread, seeing the soul, the magical words, surviving the storm, guides and messengers, and the dream continues. The second part explains the burden of proof. If you interested in esoteric answers to what happens after we die you may want to check out this book.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated Tai chi, Qigong, and Yoga stretching for seniors and the physically challenged).

The science behind consciousness
This book presents a very good discussion of the principles of quantum theory that support ancient Vedic beliefs about the consciousness of the universe. Earlier titles that covered similar ground include The Dancing Wu Li Masters by Gary Zukav, The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra and The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot, but Chopra's new work is worth reading because it includes scientific information that was not yet discovered when these other books were written.Chopra neatly articulates a few of the basic Vedic beliefs about the continuance of human consciousness after the death of the physical body, and then marshalls evidence from quantum physics to support these ancient ideas. This includes the classic idea that human souls "devolve" and incarnate in physical form in order to experience life lessons that are charted while in between lives, a state that the Tibetans called the Bardo. (You can read a lot more about this in a first-rate book by Michael Newton called Journey of Souls.)The sub-title of the book, "the burden of proof," is somewhat misleading, as Chopra doesn't actually attempt to "prove" anything. Instead he focuses on the quantum concept of randomness at the most minute, sub-atomic levels of the universe and the role that consciousness plays in influencing how that randomness eventually plays out in either/or choices. He eventually leads the reader to the BIG IDEA of the book -- that the whole universe and everything in it is conscious, and that together all conscious beings create reality. That includes rocks, trees, cosmic dust, the works. By the time Chopra gets to this rather awesome statement, the reader (or at least this particular reader) is ready to believe that it could not only be possible, but even likely. It's a tough topic to summarize effectively in a review, so I will say only that I have read many, many books on the topic of life after death, as well as issues related to it, and this book is above average. I have only one reservation: It is a bit slow going in the beginning of the book, not helped by the fact that Chopra introduces the book by telling an old, rather rambling parable about a woman who tries to cheat death. Stick with it, though, and you will be rewarded because the text picks up speed at the book's mid point, and ends up offering a wealth of ideas to consider regarding post-death survival.

A Great Read by a Living Master
It's been awhile since I have read any of Deepak's work and due to my own healing work & astral travelling, I was curious to find out what this wonderful sage and teacher had to say on the subject. I felt he was spot on and answered so many questions re energy that were entirely in keeping with my own experiences and findings. This in itself is very rewarding and nullifies those little doubts that come creeping up into, I daresay, my own psyche as well as others. This is a delightful book, which I would honestly recommend to everyone, especially given that at some point each and every one of us will exit our unique and individual physical form.Thank you for sharing Deepak, you are truly inspirational.
