Helps to point which way is north but a Silva compass is far better for hikers
I always keep a Silva Type 4 compass in my rucksack when I go hiking, as a back-up for the GPS system on my iPhone. This came in handy last year when my iPhone battery became very low and I used the compass to navigate our way through fields in the middle of the countryside. The Silva is lightweight (44g), easy to use and very clear to read. It is also incredibly robust, looking as good as new despite being well over 10 years old.By contrast, this compass looks like a fake antique brass compass, which is almost three times heavier at 112 g. Whilst the display is fairly clear, it is not in the same league as the Silva. The sighting system allows the user to line up a distant object and take a compass reading. This involves squinting through a magnifying glass, which is quite awkward. The Silva system of rotating the compass housing until the needle lies within the parallel lines is far better. The Loocower compass display is visible in low light but it doesn’t have luminous markers so is not ideal after dark.Whilst this compass will help you find which way is north, I would advise anyone who wishes to use a compass for outdoors activities to purchase a Silva Compass Expedition 4-360 model.

Sturdy little compass
This is a great piece of kit, it fits in the palm of the hand but is also liable to withstand a drop or knock, the face is the most vulnerable part but the weight makes me think that this may drop with the face upwards (I did not test this as the compass itself is aesthetically pleasing and I did not wish to destroy it putting this to the test). It is compact enough to fit in a pocket and would easily fit in a coat pocket or bag with lots of room to spare/besides. It functions very well as a good compass and can be used in conjunctions with a map to get bearings and would be of use to anyone hiking, hill trekking, orienteering, camping, anything like that. However, it would also serve very well in any decent study as ornamentation and decor, its a very nice piece, neither modern nor steam punk or vicotoriana or anything like that.It could be a good gift to someone who has been an outdoorsman (or woman) but retired from this. I have attached some pictures to give an idea of size, the cola can is provided as a comparison to give an idea of this. The compass itself if supplied in bubble wrap, in a small cardboard box within the larger Amazon parcel. It is metal, plastic and cord, no wood and has a nice weight too. Recommended.

Great for orienteering guides
My daughters are guides and have been really enjoying the opportunities that they have had to go orienteering and so have been delighted to have this compass to try out.It looks lovely - in a worn-look copper and feels like it has some age to it even though it is brand new. The shape is lovely - perfect for fitting into the palm of your hand and has a strap around it, so that you can ensure that even if you were to trip, you wouldn't drop or lose it. Even if you were to drop it, it is pretty hardy - well protected in the casing and could no doubt withstand a bit of roughness (although I am not planning to try this out, that will happen given time without my help!) When they are not using it, because it isn't too bulky, it fits into a small pocket on the side of my eldest's rucksack, so it is easy to lay her hands on, but can be stored safely and easily. The readings are accurate (checked with another compass) and it is easy to read the face of the compass and the bearings are easy to view through the magnified viewer at the pointed end. This is easy to read, but on ours some of the numbers were slightly faded. They are still readable, but it was the only disappointing aspect of our compass. Given that the rest of the compass is so good, I would still recommend it and perhaps it was a one-off manufacturing error.

A great modern retro compass
This compass has a lovely retro feel to it while remaining modern in terms of function and the clarity of the readings. The compass is made with high quality copper vintage metal to give it an almost Victorian feel but this also makes it sturdy and hard to damage. The dial is easy to read with what looks like shatterproof plastic on the top and the whole thing is waterproof too, as you'd expect. There are more accurate position readings when looking through the lens as well. The size of the whole compass is only 78mm and easy to hold in the hand when using while out and about, but it also has a useful cord to keep it around the neck. For reading in the dark, the small compass point is glow in the dark, a bit like those stickers we all used to love, but this does mean it needs some sunlight to 'recharge' the glow effect. It's not all that bright and just about readable in the dark, so I'd still recommend a flashlight or something to read it with. So, it looks great, is rugged and works well, full marks then.
