At times this book is awful and slow but then blows you away with wonderful writing. Worth the trouble.

Great book!

This and it's companion volume follow the trials and tribulations of Severian an exile from the Guild of Torturers as he makes his way through an earth that is facing a dying sun and whose inhabitants are ruled by magic as well as technology.In many ways this is similar to Jack Vance's writings about Cugel although Severian is less of a rogue and comes across as more human. Gene Wolfe has managed to make his characters appear more fully fleshed than many writers in this genre and the narrative progresses at a pleasing pace. Sometimes the plot twists are a little too obvious though.Certainly one of the better series available in this genre and well worth reading.

To me all the books in Gene Wolfe's Solar Cycle ( The book of the New Sun, Long Sun, and Short Sun) are in similar vein to The Lord of the Rings, Gormenghast, The Chronicles of Amber; Massively ambitious fantasy books that when given the proper attention, fully reach their own potential. This is a fantastically written book, sharp descriptions and a clever narrative style (severian as a narrator is fallable, and thus leads to some interesting questions over his story-telling) and leave you wanting more and more.
