Folks, you ain't seen nuthin' yet!
I absolutely love Al Jolson and this film! A lovely little piece of cinema history, and packed with extras, this DVD is a bargain.Commonly referred to as the first "talkie", this is actually a majority silent film with occasional sound pieces. So don't expect audio dialogue all the way through. But if you love Al Jolson and are interested in film history you should definitely purchase this film.

"You ain't heard nothing yet!"
Have had the VHS video for a number of years, but after a number of playings the quality is diminishing, so I took the opportunity to buy the DVD. It is nowhere as good as to the Neil Diamond version, but for its age carries well. Any movie buff should have this DVD in their collection in order to really understand how musical drama has improved over the last 87 plus years.Joe Kensell

Disappointing purchase
Couldn't fault delivery and packaging but my expectations for what I believe was a very early sound film were too high.

Mammy
My mother in law has loved Al Jolson since she was a child and particularly this film. She had an old copy which she lost ..... buying her this DVD now I'm in her good books ... hopefully for another week at least .

AL Jolson was a wonderful singer, I think the clean up took away ...
I have been a sound engineer since 1948.Talkies was born in 1929 some nineteen years later. I have heard the original sound on 78 discs and I was interested on how it would sound on dvd. Lovely without the disc scratch but it lost being an original.AL Jolson was a wonderful singer, I think the clean up took away the edge of his voice. I am more that happy to own the movie with changed the movie business overnight, from Silent to Sound.

Good product as described
Good product as described. I was a bit dissapointed in this film, it is a refurbished version of the old movie it is a SILENT MOVIE, had I realised this I would not have purchased it, but having said that my mum who is 85 and loves Al Jolson enjoyed it, where Al Jolson sings they have added the song

jazz singer
I always wanted to see this, I liked it considering how long ago it was made. A mixture of talking singing and silent movie speech cards popping up to remind you that this was a pioneering film of its day. I liked it.
