How to begin and what to do after you have begun.
I used it to make a baby quilt. Am still working on the quilt.

Surprised how nice it was
I really would never have bought this book from just seeing it online. I happened to be browsing in a bookstore and ran across it. I already like the author's work and patterns, but I didn't realize how nice this book is. Very, very nicely done. In addition, inside there are several beautiful quilt patterns, so it's really a bargain.I was already planning on buying the author's Cabin Fever book for the gorgeous patterns in there as I saw some of the quilts onYouTube on Sewing with Nancy where Nancy had her as a guest for two episodes. I can not longer find those episodes on YouTube for some reason, but you can see them on the Wisconsin Public Television site under Sewing with Nancy.

Disappointing and too basic
I'm a new quilter, but have been reading quilting blogs obsessively for a couple of months. I picked up this book because free motion is the next big skill I want to learn. Unfortunately, this book is way way way too basic. The beginning has some information about the types of batting and thread available, and when to use which but I found it lacking. It didn't describe the properties of various alternative batting (wool, silk, bamboo) except to say which are warm and/or breathable. How are they to work with? What are the challenges involved? How can you make it easier if you want to work with one of them? None of these questions are answered.Additionally, the range of free motion quilting patterns included is severely lacking. Sure, some patterns build on previous ones - single loops can become double loops, pointy-petal flowers can become round-petal flowers, you can insert stars or hearts into the loops... great. That's where it stops. The same designs are shown over and over again but as all-over designs vs. background filler designs vs. border designs.... It's rather insulting to my intelligence. I can extrapolate that an all-over design can become a background filler design by only quilting it in the background. I mean, really? I expected lots of different designs, not the same ones in small variations over and over. This was a major disappointment. On the upside, the step-by-step photos and illustrations were good, and the fact that you can copy the designs to practice on paper or fabric was cool, but overall I'm disappointed. I rarely send books back to Amazon, but this one's going back.

Excellent book for beginners and advanced free motion quilters!
I absolutely love this book.I've been free motion quilting for about six months and initially passed this book up because it's title led me to believe it would be too basic.I was REALLY wrong because it is an excellent book for both beginning and more advanced free motion quilters and full of inspiration and beautiful designs that will work on both modern and traditional quilts. The designs are lovely, very well illustrated and easy to learn and the treatment of feathers and borders is very well done in this book.I have learned a lot in this book and definitely recommend it be in the library of any free motion quilter whether you work on a longarm or domestic machine and whether you are a beginner or more advanced.

Love this!
I'm learning free motion quilting and, while I've been doing it for a while, I'm finally trying to get some legitimate techniques. I really like this book -it's not fussy and it's well laid out so I can follow it. I just love the format and the way she shows how the patterns go. I'm hesitant to say it's simple because I can see how much work Natalia has put into the book but I can see it being a reference and something I can grow with. I'm very pleased with it!

Not informative for problem solving.
I was very disappointed that there wasn’t a whole chapter, even a page, on troubleshooting, like what to try if you experience problems. Also, at least at the beginning she made many references to her type machine and it’s special built in quilting features, but if you don’t have her type machine, oh well. There were several beautiful pictures and patterns, but honestly for me, it doesn’t work.

Great book for a beginner, and to keep in your personal library
As a new to free motion quilter I wasn't sure where to start looking to find the perfect starter book for myself to use. The reviews on this book were no where near the joy of receiving this book and finding something that more than met my expectations. I was able to almost immediately jump into free-motion quilting and the results were fantastic. All I guess I needed was a book like this to guide me, and encourage me to try something other than straight line quilting, and I will never be afraid of creating more stylish and unique designs on the quilts I make.

Free-motion quilting at home
FOR WHOM IS THE BOOK?The beginner quilter, but not the beginner patchworker. How to handle various tools and materials needed to produce a quilt top aren't described at all in this book.THE SECTIONS AND CHAPTERS:Section 1. Focus on quilting:Ch.1 Machine Quilting BasicsCh.2 Allover Quilting: loops, swirls, feathers, flames, circles.Ch.3 Background Fillers: pebbles, cobblestones, wood grain, clams, swirls, microstipple.Ch.4 Borders and Sashings: feathers, circles, swirls, ovals, flowers, leaves, hearts, figure 8's, S's.Ch.5 Custom Quilted Blocks: feathers, arcs, swirls, motifs in plain blocks.Ch.6 Quilting on Appliqué: veins, circles, swirled center.Section 2. Six quilt projects to make:Ch.7-12: Amazed (84"x84"), Round and Round (71"x77 1/2"), Orange Slices (64"x64"), Twisted Up (80"x80"), Daisy Drop (67 7/8" x 67 7/8"), Happy Dots (80"x80").Ch.13 BindingSection 3. Quilting patterns:50 full-size patterns to use as templates.WEAKNESSES AND STRENGTHS:- Chapter 1 covers the basics of machine quilting, but there are almost no photos, which isn't very helpful for the visual learner. For this reason I would recommend the book to someone, who has perhaps made a quilt top or two already, but has sent them to a professional quilter.- Swirls are mentioned in chapters 2, 3, and 4, which creates overlap. When a quilting pattern is as similar as the three presented versions, I think it would be beneficial to structure the book differently. I'd prefer to see how the same swirls could be used all over, as background fillers and in borders all on the same page of the book. In other words, I don't feel there are as many patterns as 50+.- The quilting is presented in lovely close-ups and there are many explanations to go with them. Quilting corners of borders and on appliqué are also addressed, which deserves a thumb up from me.- The pages of the book are clearly structured and easy to navigate. Colours and typefaces are well used.- The six quilt projects are great practice projects for the different kinds of quilting patterns presented in the book. Some of them are quite girly, but luckily I know a girl or two, who would appreciate her very own quilt. This book is meticulously put together and contains lots of tips and tricks on how to quilt on a machine at home, but I am a visual learner, which makes ch.1 slightly difficult to grasp for a beginner, and I also question the decision to repeat some of the quilting patterns in several places. If a friend would like to start patchworking and quilting, I'd add Elizabeth Hartman's "The Practical Guide to Patchwork" to the gift.
