Best chopper out there, look no more!
If you're a family that wants to eat a lot of veggies, looking for a product that lasts, chops up vegetables quickly (cube sized) and easy to clean- LOOK NO MORE!! I bought this in July 2010, and its Sept 2013 now, and I haven't got enough words about this little thing. I use it at least 4-5 times a week to chop up vegetables (we're vegetarian, so that's the main component in our diet)-- it does a small size cubes and a medium size cubes that are all great for our curries. It comes with an egg slicer that works for slicing softer things like boiled eggs. Vegetables I have used it for: Onions, Carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, beetroot, radish, squash, pumpkin, peppers, eggs, cheese, and more Indian vegetables like guards (bottle guard, snake guard, etc) all kinds of fruits for a fruit salad/fruit custard/pie - like apples, bananas, strawberry, kiwi, grapes (yes) cantaloupe, melons, etc. It works like a charm and cuts my veggie prep time in a third. I still have to peel and prepare the vegetables- but that's close to nothing. Some hard veggies like carrots and beetroots need extra pressure, I get a small step stool (I`m 5'2") for the extra pressure it needs to cut harder veggies. Sometimes I microwave/steam them first before cutting them up. It would be great if Progressive can incorporate blades with some other shapes in this other than cubes, like thin long rectangular shape- they could also incorporate a grater blade into this. but of course, they're quite clear it only chops up cubes. This is easily the most durable gadget in my kitchen. I bought it for less than 25 bucks back then, seems like progressive has increased the price on this item, but I would still buy it for the current listed price if I knew the worth! I was looking for this to send it to my sister in India, and I`m ordering one right away :)

A staple for every good cook! 11 year update!
I have had this chopper for over a year now and just love it! In the summer it makes quick work of salads and ceviche, in the winter it's great for veggie prep in soups and stews. There is a very slight learning curve when starting to use it...applying the right pressure, quick blows work but slow pressing will squash any soft veggies. I find that you have to ensure that the veggie fits within the size of the grate and if not, I cut it to size. For summer salads I cut my plum tomatoes in half and then put on a half, cut side down on the grate and get the most perfect little cubes for my salads. As soon as I'm finished I run in under warm water with the attached comb and have never had a problem. I find I don't need to put it in the dishwasher, but I sometimes do anyway just to sterilize it. This not only cuts prep time to a fraction, but the uniform pieces look very professional in it's presentation. I have bought the other two sizes as well, the smaller grate I use for finely chopped peppers and onions and the smallest for garlic that you want minced, not pressed. If you like egg salad, chop your eggs, onion, celery and whatever else you like in it and stir in the mayo for a salad in 60 seconds! You don't even have to empty between chopping (unless of course your using the veggies for different dishes). The storage case is handy and keeps everything organized and easy to find. Pay attention to the blades that say soft fruits and veggies only...I think this is why some people wrote negative reviews...they really need to read the directions...bet they are mostly guys ;) Addendum: It's been nearly two years and it still works like new, I still love it, still easy to clean and I haven't lost or broken any parts...I was sure by now I would lose the comb but because of the case, I still have it. On a slow week I'll use it twice in a week, on a busy week, several time during the day. I have more recently been using it for fruit...apples, melons, pineapple...and it is the best for strawberries. I have the hardest time using it for yams and turnips but still use it...just requires a little more muscle and no stacking of slices. Summer salads are a breeze and what would take me an hour for a large bowl or two, now takes minutes. I've learned never to leave a cut end of a juicy fruit or veggie facing you...it will squirt juices on you...instead if possible I put the cut side down or face it away from me. I still use the other two smaller units but not as often as this one...it is truely a staple in my kitchen. UPDATE: it’s been 11 years now, and my bin just cracked. I thought about looking for a replacement bin. I have tested other units and I just don’t like them as well. Since I’ve had this unit for 15 years, I think it’s well worth the money to buy the same unit all over again… May I get another 15 years out of it. The blades never dulled in all of 15 years! Other than the bin cracking from my forceful, slamming down over the years no other parts were ever lost or broken. Thanks to the plastic holding bin. Most of the other units that I’ve tried had smaller surface areas. Most did not have the feet on the bottom to keep the unit from sliding and it’s likely what kept it from breaking for 15 years. It went in and out of the dishwasher for 15 years with no issues. Very few units have the little fork that can clean out that upper great and it’s so important! And Very few units have the little fork that can clean out that upper grate and it’s so important! And no other unit has a holding bin to keep all of the parts intact. And although I have two other similar units from other brands, I’m gonna spend the 40 bucks to get this again. I give this unit my highest recommendation!

Hard to clean, broke after 2 months.
We got this chopper because our knife skills leave something to be desired and I wanted uniform pieces for cooking. Ordered it on January 18th, 2014. Threw away March 18th, 2014. Was not pleased throughout most of our use, very difficult product. You have to cut items pretty small to get it to fit on the chopper and thin enough that it can actually cut through them. I'm not sure about the "side blade" it mentioned, we had to cut our items small enough to fit within the metal grid, which isn't really very big. It took a lot of muscle to push it down to get things to chop, even for soft items like onions. On the flip side, if the item was too soft (such as strawberries for a salsa I made) they smushed and got kind of gross. Eventually we had to push so hard (While cutting a red onion cut into 8ish pieces first) that the piece of the base holding the lid on broke. Then you had to clean it! The little tool they give is very helpful for cleaning out the top, but the blades held on to food like nobody's business. I'd have to wash this thing 2-3 times before finally getting it all. Forget about putting it in the dishwasher, it can't get the stuff unstuck at all! We were just not satisfied with any of this product!

excellent product!
This chopper arrived at my home about a month ago and has quickly become a kitchen staple. I use it almost daily for salad. My usual chopped salad which used to take 30 min to make, now only takes about 5 min. So its a wonderful time saver and easy to use. You do have to bang down the lid with the bottom of your fist. It takes a bit of strength, but I actually find it fun and a bit of a stress reliever! I find you do have to use firm, not too ripe vegetables, and try to quarter them first. I've used it on plum tomatoes, cucumbers, red peppers and onions and it works well with the large slotted blade insert. The small one did not do a good job. I also tried the "fruit slicer" insert on strawberries and it worked well, but I prob wont use this as much. All in all a great purchase and much better than electrical, small food choppers that I have owned which just turn veggies into mush. For cleaning, if you use the provided "comb" and dont overfill the container, you should be fine. All the parts go in the dishwasher and store nicely in the box provided.

Almost the perfect chopper.
I use this chopper on a regular basis. I have tried several other brands/types, such as Pampered Chef, OXO and Black and Decker. The Progressive chopper is my favorite. Pros: - can cut three different sizes (slices, small chunks and large chunks) - cuts evenly/uniformly - comes with a storage box that fits all parts nicely - dishwasher safe - comes with cleaning tool (which is necessary) Cons: - can't cut harder fruits/vegetables (soft, thin blades bend easily) - small cutting surface does require pre-cutting before placing in chopper - some fruits vegetables get stuck in the blades so need to be "tapped" out frequently (strawberries, celery, etc) I did have to replace mine, the base broke and cannot be replaced without buying the whole set again.

This Chopper is FANTASTIC!
I got this chopper a few weeks ago. It is very sturdy, not flimsy. I like the rubber feet to keep it stationary while I chop. I like the different blades so that I can dice and mince -- have not used the blade for fragile stuff like eggs and strawberries but will be soon. It is SO EASY to use. The tool to clean it makes clean up a snap. I've had no problem whatsoever with onions -- that's one of the vegs I chop in it all the time. Love how they come out all uniform. I've used all different kinds of peppers, zucchini, garlic. I want to try apples next because I've been buying the sliced apple crunch pac for convenience -- well, I can use this to slice my apples and save LOTS. Just bathe them in lemon juice to keep from getting brown and I'm set. I also used potates to make little french fries. It chops very weell. I'm thinking how easy this is gonna be for potato salad in the summer. Yum!!! I am very satisfied with this product. I wonder, though, how long the sharp blades will last. That is my only concern. Since this is such a cheap product, I will probably buy again if need be.

Works well if you follow the instructions
I've purchased 3 cheaper versions of this type chopper in a year period and they all broke at the hinges on the base + one had blades that bent. I was unable to get replacement parts. This chopper has a more study lid and base + it has a case to keep everything together. I've seen some complain that they can't get the items back in the case so that it will close. Put the booklet in the bottom of the case. Then put "comb" in the bottom of the base and then put one chopper insert inside the tool. Close the tool and put it in the bottom of the case. Stack the 2 other inserts so that the top tabs are up but on opposite sides from each other. Put these on top of the tool and the case should close. I've used this tool to chop onions, carrots, celery, eggs, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, apples, pears, and peaches. It also slices black olives, eggs and strawberries really well. I typically use is at least one time a month to chop 5+ lbs of carrots, 5+ lbs of potatoes and 1-2 pounds of celery in one sitting. The key for hard-to-chop foods is to press the top down util it's touching the food and then "smack" or "pound" the top near the open end. Also, firm foods like carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, etc. chop better if they are quartered and/or sliced first--nowhere do the instructions say you don't have to do some prep work for the tool to work correctly. I have also found that putting taller, firm foods (like onions, carrots & potatoes) on the chopping blades further away from the hinge works best--this totally goes against physics since placing the food closer to the hinge should multiply the force more; maybe I get a better angle on the "pound"??? I've had no bent blades with this model. Clean up works best if you run water over the top while "combing" it or putting it in a sink full of water and "combing". I use an old toothbrush to clean the blades--washing those in the top of a dishwasher has never gotten all the junk out no matter how I lay them in the rack. Edited to update: In July 2014, one of the protrusions at the hinge broke and then cracked the base. I contacted the company about getting a replacement part. I told them what the part was and asked about the price/shipping. A week later, the replacement showed up at my house at not cost. Edited to update Jan. 17, 2016. Eighteen no the after the company replaced the base and I'm still chopping away. Definitely a good investment.

Updated Review - Disappointed!!
Initial Review - Feb 2012: I am not a gourmet cook and only started taking an interest in cooking after my little girl was born. I work over 70 hours a week and cannot always cook gourmet meals or even consistently healthy meals for my family, especially my little girl. So, I am always grateful when I find a kitchen appliance or tool that can help save valuable time and make cooking healthy meals less of a chore. Enter: the Fruit and Vegetable chopper!! It is a nifty little chopper that comes with three separate attachments for chopping, slicing, and dicing (the storage box to keep the chopper is pretty nice, too). The construction "seems" pretty sturdy and although it takes some effort to chop some of the more hardy fruits and vegetables, overall the chopper does considerably lessen the amount of time it to takes to prep for meals. Cleanup is easy - just put them all in the dishwasher and put them away in the storage container when done..as simple as that! A must-have for anyone cooks.....two thumbs up!! April 21, 2012 - UPDATE: I had to change my initial 5-star rating to a 3-star rating because after just a month of use, the chopper broke while I was chopping boiled carrots!! Big on potential - small on performance!!

Makes food prep a breeze!
This Fruit and Vegetable chopper by Progressive works like a charm. It makes food prep a breeze and is easy enough for everyone in the family to help with dinner. It is much sturdier than the previous model I bought 4 years ago so I have no doubt it will last a long time. I also like the slicer attachment which its predecessor did not have.
