One for the Road: How to Be a Music Tour Manager

A Great Read For Fans Of Metal Music
This book is well written, informative and very entertaining. I have been a fan of Metal Music since a friend made me a Metallica compilation tape in 1989 and have been hooked ever since. While I personally have no desire to be a road manager, I was drawn to this book as a music fan because of my curiosity about how a tour works and was interested in the raw, gritty, honest insider's view that the author's 30+ years of experience provides. Mr. Workman delivered!! He details every conceivable aspect of a tour and delivers the message in terms totally understandable to an outsider like me.I now have a complete understanding of how much goes in to preparing for a tour, how a tour runs and just how critical the role of a tour manager is. The anecdotes Mr. Workman provides had me laughing out loud, but ultimately the lesson is clear in each one.I highly recommend this book to any music fan who is simply interested in life on the road. I have not been able to find anything other book that details a side of the music business that one rarely has an opportunity to see.More importantly, if you interested in a career on the road, this book should be required reading!!

It's the book of tour managing.
Great book!! It is a lot about doing bus tours but you learn a lot. I am a touring drummer and we do vans and small clubs and I have leaned a lot. If you want to be a tour manager get this book you will be great if you use and do the information in this book.

good the bad and the ugly. why we do this!!
This is a true Testament of what people in this business go through. It's a great starter book for who ever what's to try the tour business. Even better as refresher and make a few things better. Just a great read and very well done. Can't wait to tour again to try some new stuff out. Thank you mark!!!

A great read!
This is a very real and attention-grabbing look into the music business and the many aspects of tour managing. More than any "how to" book- it delivers realistic lesson plans and road stories from a man who has really there and done that! Workman puts everything out on the table and does so in a wild and witty manner. Highly entertaining for anyone interested in the music scene.

A nice book that could use a revised version (v2.0)
A rather nice book that will give some insight to what it is like to work as a tour manager. The writing could use some polishing, now there were many things that were repeated (with exactly the same words) in different parts of the books. Maybe some more real life examples could've made it a more interested read.

Fantastic read, informative & witty.
This book really tells it like it is... highly recommended. I work in the business myself but still found lots of handy hints from an exceptional tour manager with a colourful turn of phrase & a work ethic to aspire to...

Comprehensive
Concert tour management is a largely undocumented and under-reported career role in the live music business, and so finding out how to break into the ‘job’ is difficult. Luckily, Mark Workman’s book is comprehensive, and so is pretty much the only resource tour will need to find out what a tour manager does and how you can become one.The book is very detailed and explains exactly hat the roles and responsibilities of the modern concert tour manager are.The author also lists his personal experiences of life on-the-road, which I think are intended to act as a warning about how the rock’n’roll lifestyle still exists, and how to be mindful of it.The author is American and has toured internationally, and so his references apply to global touring, not just the US. Recommend.

good book.
I got this book within 2 days so fast delivery. A very big book actually as i thought it was standard small size book. good for people who wear glasses. A useful book to help your band with doing a stage plot and keeping paperwork together for your band. My band sometimes put on our own gigs and little mini pub festivals so this book goes over things you can over look and forget to do. A stage plot is so important to know the lineup of a band and what a band needs on stage If your hosting your own gig and working with support bands this book helps with planning stuff. so if your band is planning a tour or just doing local gigs this book is a gem to have and a must for your bookshelf with other music books. Also a good interesting read of the experiences of the author.

Interesting read
Although not the most technical book on the subject it has a good blend of practical information and personality to make it an interesting and enjoyable read. I probably learned more reading this than I did some of the hefty Events Management text books I have due to my brain not switching off two paragraphs in.I would not recommend it to anybody doing a course in Events Management (like myself) as a reference but I would recommend it to anybody just starting out in events or just wants an interesting view into the world of touring bands.
