The Red Scrolls of Magic (The Eldest Curses) Paperback – 9 April 2019

You can build a bridge over the divide and find each other.”Once again, I’ve really struggled with another of Cassandra Clare’s co-authored books. The plot dragged and didn’t really go anywhere, the narrative often felt childish and flat and ultimately the book just didn’t add anything to the wider series.The Red Scrolls of Magic is the first book in a new spin off series featuring Magnus and Alec. I thought this would be great - I love both characters - and this would be their first adventure on a holiday together. Magnus’s humour and adoration for Alec, combined with Alec’s nervous first step into a relationship, should have made for a really fun read, but even the usual humour was lacking.The holiday goes from bad to worse as Magnus and Alec notice the downworlder footprint is much larger in Paris and Venice than it really should be. Something is clearly going on. They quickly learn, after their third inconvenient demon attack, that The Crimson Hand, a fake cult set up by Magnus years ago as a joke, is now a serious cult amassing human sacrifices for a Greater Demon, all in the name of their leader. People are dead because of Magnus’s joke and the pair are determined to stop the murders and clear Magnus’s name.The concept to me felt boring, one dimensional and often childish, although admittedly something stupid Magnus might do! I liked that the plot featured a couple of cameos significant to Magnus’s life, such as Raphael, Ragnor and Catarina (or Juliette, the werewolf girl featured in the Ghosts of the Shadow Market Anthology) but none of these actually FELT significant, rather they were just names dropped for effect. I did however appreciate the various nods to Tessa who helps Magnus bridge the shadowhunter-warlock divide, and to Helen and Aline’s initial meeting; it’s genuinely interesting to see more of how their romance developed.The writing is really disappointing in this book. The dialogue is dry and not compelling at all, in stark contrast to her usual work. It feels entirely underdeveloped and rushed. The plot drags along at a mediocre pace, with various sub-plots I just didn’t care about because it was so one dimensional, and the characters have even lost some of what makes them interesting. Maybe Alec and Magnus are just better when they’re amongst their friends, or maybe it’s a co-authoring problem, but this book really did absolutely nothing for me or for the series as far as I can tell.

Many would say that this book is aimed at a young teen audience, but I genuinely believe any adult will enjoy this. If you are a fan of Malec, THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU THIRST FOR MORE! I could not get enough of it. The way the passion between the two was written, was just stunning.The story overall was amazing, thrilling and kept me at the edge of my seat numerous times. Totally hoping that there will be a second book! I need more Malec like this!If you are having second thoughts about buying this, don't. Just buy it! it will not disapoint!

Very disappointed with this book. Yes I understand it was mainly about Magnus + Alec but for me I really did not want to read so much about their physical relationship. I guess I was hoping for more of the same kind of story as TMI + TDA but this did t really have a story line that I could get interested in. I guess I’m not really into reading about a homosexual relationship. I doubt very much that I will be buying any more of this particular series

I’m a massive fan of the Shadowhunters books and the film and the TV show. Oh, look! I’m drooling. Magnus is my favourite character so of course I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this. The book lived up to every expectation. I also love Paris and love Alex and Magnus’s relationship. I liked the fact this book is set apart from the other Shadowhunters series and focusses on only a couple of characters. There’s everything you expect from a Shadowhunters book here including an evil cult (that Magnus sort of created), demons, exploding house and satanic rituals. Magnus is his usual glorious self. He’s such a whiny, vain little bitch but I can’t help love him. He spends much of the book in a sulk which is hilarious. I loved the scene where he’s freaking out about possibly dying when he’s surrounded by badly dressed people. Oh, Magnus! I haven’t read The Dark Artifices series yet so much get on it ASAP.

I have always loved Cassandra Clare and her incredible Shadowhunter world. As someone who knows the world well in particularly the main characters in this book (and the side characters too) I have to say I LOVED IT!To hear Alex and Magnus’ story - a story that, after reading the acknowledgements, was a long and tough road to publication due to discrimination - means so much to all members of the LGBT+ community... representation really does matter!I was apprehensive as I don’t identify in particular with either character - I am neither male, nor attracted to males - but I am a true romantic at heart and this story really did grip my heart. I only hope that the cheeky snippets we’ve been introduced to with some of the side characters have the opportunity to grow in books of their own (ie. H and A). I have a feeling they will be even more enjoyable to me!

We finally have a MALEC story of our very own. I know this pairing shot to fame due in part to the TV series. This story is but the first chapter in a 3 part saga and my only complaint is that it's not long enough.There's an awful lot packed into this book thou and Alec and Magnus are just as funny, witty, silly and fun as they have been, thats not to say it doesn't have it's share of darker moments and this story delves allot deeper into Magnus past and deal's with his fears and worries about exactly how much Alec will come to know about him and his past. That's not to say Alex doesn't share the spot light. We get a look into Alec and his own insecurities when it comes to his relationship with The High Warlock of Brooklyn and his fear's about where they will ultimately end up.I've tried to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. I must admit to reading this book all in one go on the day I received it and re-reading it. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

„All Magnus Bane wanted was a vacation.“So beginnt der Klappentext zu dem neuesten Roman aus dem Shadowhunter-Universum und es war alles, was ich brauchte, um zu wissen, dass ich dieses Buch unbedingt lesen muss. Normalerweise lese ich nicht so viel auf Englisch und warte lieber, bis das Buch auf Deutsch erscheint, aber dieses Mal konnte ich einfach nicht warten. Eine Geschichte, die Magnus und Alec in den Mittelpunkt stellt – wer kann da warten?Das Englisch liest sich auch unglaublich leicht und angenehm. Wenige Wörter, die ich nicht verstanden habe, habe ich dann halt mal gegoogelt oder mir aus dem Zusammenhang erschlossen, aber insgesamt ist es wirklich leicht verständlich. Und vor allem habe ich gemerkt, dass in der Übersetzung (mal wieder) unglaublich viele Witze verloren gehen werden, denn es gibt einige Wortspiele, die nur auf Englisch funktionieren.Vor dem Lesen habe ich eine Rezension gelesen, in der einem geraten wurde, das Buch erst nach „The Dark Artifices“ zu lesen, da man sonst nicht alles verstehen könnte. Den Eindruck hatte ich ganz und gar nicht, bei mir sind keinerlei Wissenslücken entstanden – und ich glaube (und hoffe!), dass ich auch nicht gespoilert wurde. (Ich korrigiere das, wenn sich mein Eindruck nach dem Lesen von „The Dark Artifices“ ändern sollte.) Es begegnen einem zwar einige Charaktere, die man erst in „The Dark Artifices“ kennenlernt – zum Beispiel Hexenmeister Malcolm Fade (sehr amüsanter Typ) –, aber Vorwissen zu dieser Reihe ist absolut nicht nötig. „The Mortal Instruments“ und „The Infernal Devices“ sollte man aber gelesen haben, sonst könnte man tatsächlich nicht alles verstehen. Man sollte schon wissen, wer Magnus, Alec, Raphael, Aline, Helen, Tessa und Will sind …Zeitlich befinden wir uns während des vierten Bandes, „City of Fallen Angels“, von „The Mortal Instruments“, nämlich zu dem Zeitpunkt, zu dem Alec und Magnus im Urlaub sind. Oder das zumindest geplant haben, denn die Probleme lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. So sehr Magnus sich auch anstrengt, Alec mit romantischen Unternehmungen und schöner Kulisse zu beeindrucken, letztendlich holen ihn doch seine Vergangenheit und die Geheimnisse ein, die er vor Alec bisher verborgen hat. Dass er vor langer Zeit einen Kult gegründet haben soll, der Dämonen anbetet, ist aber selbst ihm neu. Er kann sich nicht daran erinnern. „The Red Scrolls of Magic“ – wenn man so will, das „Regelwerk“ des Kultes – sagt jedoch etwas anderes: „Life is a stage, so exit in style. Only the faithful who make a truly great drink shall be favored. […]” (S. 183) – das klingt doch schon verdächtig nach einem Witz, genau genommen nach einem seiner Witze. Alec und ihm bleibt nichts anderes übrig, als ihre Urlaubspläne erstmal auf Eis zu legen und diesem Kult näher auf den Grund zu gehen, in Magnus’ fester Erwartung, dass es ihre noch recht frische Beziehung auf die Probe stellen wird.Ich musste beim Lesen des Klappentextes schon grinsen, denn einen Kult im Scherz zu gründen klingt absolut nach etwas, das Magnus tun würde. So amüsant, wie schon die Ausgangsstory anmutet, ist das gesamte Buch. Wer die anderen Reihen aus dem Shadowhunter-Universum kennt, weiß, dass sich die meisten Charaktere nicht besonders ernst nehmen, vor allem nicht Magnus, der kaum zwei Seiten durchhält, ohne eine witzige Bemerkung von sich zu geben. Seine sarkastischen, selbstbewussten Bemerkungen lassen auch hier nicht lange auf sich warten – und selbstverständlich ist er so schillernd und modebewusst wie eh und je. Unglaublich gefreut habe ich mich aber auch über ein Wiedersehen mit Raphael, dem größten Miesepeter auf der Welt, der für die absolut witzigsten Gespräche (mit Alec!) gesorgt hat, obwohl das ganz sicher nie seine Intention war. Ich fühlte mich also wieder einmal unglaublich gut unterhalten und habe die meiste Zeit nur laut gelacht oder breit gegrinst.»Can I have your autograph, Raphael?« asked the faerie lady. She produced a large, shiny green leaf and a quill. Raphael wrote LEAVE ME ALONE on the leaf. (S. 141)Unser anderer männlicher Protagonist, Bogenschütze Alec, den ich wie Magnus in „The Mortal Instruments“ lieben gelernt habe, ist mir hier noch stärker ans Herz gewachsen. Ich freue mich riesig, dass wir endlich mal etwas mehr von ihm lesen konnten. Er ist der eigentliche Held dieser Geschichte, denn was Alec auf diesen Seiten alles vollbringt, ist Wahnsinn. Er rettet Magnus aus jeder noch so brenzligen Situation, angetrieben von seiner Angst um und seiner Liebe zu ihm. Es ist nicht schwer nachzuvollziehen, warum Magnus hin und weg von ihm ist: auf der einen Seite ist Alec der unerbittliche, mutige Schattenjäger, der vor keinem Kampf zurückschreckt, und auf der anderen ist er der schüchterne, unsichere Kerl, der glaubt, in Bezug auf emotionale Angelegenheiten mit Worten nicht so gut umgehen zu können, obwohl er die bezauberndsten Dinge von sich gibt. Ich bin sicher, dass die meisten meiner Markierungen Äußerungen von ihm sind. Der regelmäßige Sichtwechsel zwischen ihm und Magnus hat mir unglaublich gut gefallen.»Stop telling me to let you go,« said Alec. »I will never listen. I want to be with you. I never wanted anything more in my life. If you fall, I want to fall with you.« (S. 314)Neben dem Humor, den wundervollen Protagonisten und der Liebesgeschichte zwischen Magnus und Alec, die einen großen Teil des Buches ausmacht, da durch jede Seite sickert, wie viel die beiden einander bedeuten – und seien wir mal ehrlich: wir Malec-Fans wollen das ja auch lesen! – überzeugt dieser erste Band auch durch interessante Nebencharaktere, spannende Handlungsstränge, unerwartete Plot-Twists und eine zweite schöne Liebesgeschichte, nämlich die von Aline und Helen, die sich hier zum ersten Mal begegnen. Egal, ob die Handlung gerade etwas ruhiger oder voller Action ist, es passiert immer irgendetwas Interessantes und sei es nur, dass Alec ein amüsantes Gespräch mit Jace am Telefon führt. Für Cassandra Clare-Fans – und ganz besonders für Malec-Fans – ist dieser Auftakt ein absolutes Muss. Ich bin begeistert und erwarte jetzt schon ungeduldig den nächsten Band.FazitWieder ein geniales Buch aus der Feder von Cassandra Clare – ich bin immer wieder davon fasziniert, dass ihr die Ideen einfach nicht auszugehen scheinen. Ich hoffe, das bleibt noch ganz ganz lange so, da ich es liebe, in die Schattenjäger-Welt abzutauchen. Fans des Universums (und vor allem von Malec) sind hier goldrichtig – unbedingt lesen! Von mir gibt es die volle Punktzahl.

If you ship Malec, then this is a good read. Unfortunately, it's not a great read, as it could have done with a bit more plot and general merriment. I'm happy it adds more LGBTQ+ rep in YA novels, so it gets kudos on those grounds for sure. But a Malec story could be more rollickingly good fun than this. Knowing that some of the characters' stories continue in other books that have already been published kills much of the suspense and tension. It's not as funny as Magnus and Co. usually is; the Bane Chronicles are better written and have a kind of gleeful irreverence that is needed more in this book- it gets too heavy sometimes. I would have said that Clare writes better alone usually, but after reading QoAaD, I don't know if I believe that anymore! Though I must say I waited impatiently for that book, which I will not be doing for this sequel. However, if you can't get enough of Magnus Bane (I love him! What a great character!) this is definitely a book for you. But where is the part about Magnus in a sari...?

Das Buch liest sich tatsächlich wie erhofft: wie eine lange Version der Kurzgeschichten aus den Bane-Chroniken und der Schattenjägerakademie.Man bekommt die POV aus der Sicht von Alec und Magnus - von niemandem sonst - und bekommt so viel mehr Einblick in ihr Innenleben als in TMI (The mortal Instruments/Chroniken der Unterwelt) oder TDA (The dark artifices/die dunklen Mächte).Und so wird die Geschichte auch um so emotionaler.Zudem bekommt man Einblicke in die Motivationen und Gedanken der beiden, die das Verhalten in den letzten 3 TMI Bänden noch besser erklären.Insbesondere Magnus Verschwiegenheit wurde mit spürbarer. Es gibt aber auch Offenbarungen zu seiner Vergangenheit. Sehr spannend.Die Szenen der beiden sind wirklich emotional und auch etwas heiß. Sehr cool.Ich habe Cassies Schreibstil in den emotionalen Szenen total wiedererkannt. Und damit natürlich auch Magnus uns Alec - bzw. die jungen Versionen der beiden im Vergleich zu TDA.Die Handlung spielt während City of fallen Angels.Wie Cassandra Clare auch sagte, sind die Kampfszenen eher Werk von Wesley Chu.Man trifft viele Charaktere aus TMI und TDA! Insbesondere aus TDA - ich hatte das Gefühl, sie versucht wirklich jedem eine kleine Szene zu geben.Das ist sehr süß. Und die Reaktionen auf Malec sind auch bei allen ein wenig anders.Besonders gut gefiel mir Raphael. Aber auch Ragnor-Fans dürfen sich auf schöne Erinnerungen von Magnus freuen.Ein wenig schade ist, dass ich die Geschehnisse aus City of lost souls immer im Hinterkopf hatte.Das wird bei dem nächsten Band "The lost book of the White" nichtmehr der Fall sein. Der wird nach TMI und vor TDA spielen.Der nächste Band soll im September 2020 erscheinen - erst kürzlich aus gesundheitlichen Gründen von Cassandra Clare verschoben.Ich hoffe, der Band wird dann auch etwas länger als dieser, denn er ist furchtbar schnell gelesen - jedoch lese ich die besonderen Malec-Stellen in diesem Buch auch immer gerne wieder.Gespoilert wird man meiner Meinung nach weder zu TMI noch TDA. Es gibt kleine Spoiler, die man aber nicht erkennen wird, wenn man die Bücher nicht schon liest. Man verpasst jedoch die Wiedererkennungsmomente zu den TDA Charakteren und versteht manche Anspielungen dann nicht.

Oh mein Gott, meine Gebete wurden erhört. Endlich ein Buch über Magnus und Alec und es kommen noch zwei weitere. Alec und Magnus wie wir sie kennen und lieben, obwohl mir Alec im Buch besser gefallen hat als Magnus. Magnus war manchmal einfach so unausgeglichen und konnte sich nicht in Alec hinein versetzen.Ich fand es auch sehr traurig das Magnus nicht mehr Vertrauen zu Alec gehabt hat und ihm nicht sein dunkles Geheimnis anvertraut hat. Alec muss man einfach lieben, er tut so viel für die Menschen/Downworlders die er liebt. Er war schon immer mein Favorit, aber seit diesem Buch, liebe und respektiere ich ihn noch viel mehr.Wir treffen ein paar bekannte Gesichter, aber auch ein paar neue Figuren wurden mit ins Buch eingebunden. Die Story war super lustig, sehr romantisch, mit einem Hauch von Leidenschaft und natürlich kam auch die Action nicht zu kurz.Mir hat vor Lachen der Bauch weh getan und die speziellen Szenen von Malec waren einfach nur heiß, besonders die eine im Zug hat es mir angetan. Ich fand sie sogar noch erotischer als die ganz letzte Szene zwischen ihnen im Buch.Und natürlich die Szene mit dem Handtuch im Hotel in Rom war einfach nur mega. Schade das es keine Bilder dazu gab, ich glaube sie hätten mir den Rest gegeben. Ich freue mich schon sehr auf den nächsten Teil und hoffe das ich ein paar Antworten auf die ein oder andere offene Frage bekommen werde. Bis jetzt ist das Buch mein zweit liebstes in diesem Jahr!!

So Magnus decides to take his boyfriend to an incredible trip through Europe to show how beautiful like can be after so many traumatic episodes and death. Alec and Magnus having been recently announced their relationship will embark in a journey of self-discovery and getting to know a little more about each other, that’s what the trip is also about. Unfortunately, Tessa Gray, a fellow warlock comes to them with bad news...somehow people are hunting the cult called Crimson Hand and the lider of it is called Magnus Bane. When Magnus Bane himself don’t remember anything about this cult and he feels like someone messed up with his memories from years before...Alec and Magnus decide to find this lider that is posing as Magnus and end with this cult that is killing mundanes and downworlders.Throughout their first trip together, Magnus and Alec go to Paris, Venice and Rome. And in each city, something dangerous and messy happens that makes their vacation time to a more non-relaxing one. They try to have their little moments of peace at the beginning but then when they feel that the problem with the cult is bigger than they thought of...they go full head on to solve it.Having Alec’s AND Magnus’s point of view was exhilarating and beautiful. We had the opportunity of seeing how they both feel at this beginning of a relationship (that we all know will end with marriage and two kids in the future). Their fears regarding each other and how they both feel of having each other in their lives was at the same time heartbreaking and amazing, some tears were shed I can guarantee that. Alec always so open to Magnus’s history and Magnus always determined to not lose Alec...I love how Alec is set to change things so everyone can be accepted to the Clave and that everyone deserves to be treated the same, not mattering about race (downworlders and shadowhunters and mundanes).
