Great for starting off
Stock Investing For DummiesI ordered this book because some of my co-workers were constantly talking about stocks, and I not only wanted to understand them, but I wanted to have solid foundation before setting up with a brokerage myself. The book does a good job starting out with simple concepts and including vocabulary that might show up in stock dealings or conversations. It covers pretty much everything you would need to understand the basics of stocks, not really the economics of them, but markets, trends, buying and selling, brokerages, numbers and some financial analysis. While some of the advice was simplistic and redundant at times (buy stocks when they are cheap, who would have thought to do that?), or be wary of losing all your money (well, yeah...), it was good advice nonetheless. Other stuff was quite informative, especially some of the ratios that the author goes on to explain, as well as factors to consider when investing that people may commonly overlook. Overall, a solid introductory book on stocks (but nothing else on say, mutual funds or other securities).

Great Start
I bought this book before I started jumping into stock investing. It's a great beginner's resource that will get you up to speed on a variety of topics / strategies / ideas. If you want to start investing in the stock market, best get your hands on a copy. It's not going to teach you the details of everything you need to know, but it will get you started and point you in the right direction for research, financial data, etc. After you have a good foundation, you can move on to more advanced books.

Excellent beginner book
I knew very little about the stock market before I read this book (only what I learned in High School). I read it from cover to cover and it is very informative covering what I believe is all the bases. Some topics were covered more in depth than others. An example is discussing what options are, but not going into incredible detail about them. However, the author cites several web sites and other books that one could read to understand more about any subject that he covered. The focus of the author's strategy is more fundamental analysis than technical analysis. Both are discussed, but fundamentals are stressed. After having read it, I would describe it as a reference. Each section is self explanatory and when needing answers, one could skip to that page/section and understand it without having to read previous chapters (although that does help). I am still not an expert, but I feel I know enough to begin a small portfolio and start my retirement now.

It's ok - but only if you're solid on macroeconomics
The book is decent as a 30,000 foot overview of the mechanics of buying stocks. That said, I would not touch it with a 30 foot pole if you do not have a good basis in macroeconomics. Its important to have an idea of how the economy as a whole will do, because you'll pick different investments if the economy is expanding than if it is failing or going into deflation. Instead of educating you about the major macroeconomic theories and then telling you why his is best, he treats the majority theories unfairly to try to convert you to his (very minority) view by default.Of the two best-supported theories of macroeconomics, he doesn't mention one (the Chicago school) and spends his time distorting and engaging in fifth-grade name-calling about the other one (Keynesianism). For instance, he takes Keynes quotes out of context and attributes to Keynesians actions taken by Chicago economists. The author does not, however, critique his own theory, Austrian economics, at all - which is a problem since one thing the vast majority of the economics profession will agree on is that Austrianism is inconsistent with itself and makes empirically incorrect predictions.

Great way of learning the basics
I am new to stock investing and really wanted to get a feel of what it is all about. They have a newer version of this book now so I would get the newer one since the author uses the "recent outside affects" to write this book and let you know kind of the situation we are in. It has a lot of stuff for beginners which is enough to just get an idea and gives you time to research these ideas even more. Most of what it is is common sense though, but I guess it just means that you need common sense when you are stock traiding.I felt the author seemed courteous too since he writes in the very beginning you are free to read which sections you want, but he would rather you read the entire thing. Worth getting since it has all the basic information you need to get started, or just an idea what you need to learn in more detail.

Great tool to learn the Stock Market!
Everyone should have the opportunity in this country to be able to make passive incomes. Everyone in this country has the opportunity to plan a successful retirement, without counting on the government and their 401k. Stock Investing for Dummies is the first in the "for dummies" series that I've ever read, and it is so easy to understand, and gives such excellent step by step strategies that I both recommend it to all interested in the subject, and was urged to go back to the "for dummies" series for another text book. I give it a top review for the beginner interested in the Stock Market.

A good place to start
I doubt that anyone would buy a "Dummies" book expecting to find an in-depth, comprehensive treatment of the topic, but instead is looking for a simple and straightforward introduction to stock investing. This book definitely serves its purpose. "Stock Investing for Dummies" provides the reader with very basic instruction on stocks and investing. You cannot expect that it will teach you to be a solid investor, or even that you will be able to differentiate between good stocks and those that are about to crash, but it will give you the basic knowledge that you need to understand the stock market and further your financial management abilities.
