Musical Fidelity V-DAC MKII

Don't waste your money. I purchased the VDAC from Audio Advisor and tested it on my home stereo. I hated it. It made the highs sound phony and bass muddy. It was agonizing to listen to. Luckily you can return equipment for a full refund within the first 30 days of purchase so, I got a refund. I purchased the PS AUDIO Digital Link DAC for $799. WOW!! The PS Audio is highly recommended. Unbelievable sound quality. You get what you pay for!

I will second all of the reviews written here regarding this device.The Music Fidelity V-DAC is beyond unbelievable. The V-DAC has absolutelymade a tremendous difference especially when I'm listening to high bit-rateFLAC music sources (800 - 4500 kbps). The clarity, separation, and detailare beyond anything I've ever heard from any pure audiophile setup.I am using my V-DAC with the Pyramid power supply also recommended here, andhave them connected to my laptop using a high quality Mediabridge USB cable.My other components are a Marantz receiver and Focal speakers with 14 gauge speakerwire. It has also added new life my CD collection although I now am only collectingFLAC source music due to the incredible stellar difference with my V-DAC.It has breathed new life in my music and it is a wonderful device andwell worth the price.==============================================================================Update for early 2012 -I upgraded from the V-DAC to V-DAC MK-II - wow!!!What I thought could not get better went beyond any expectations I had forimproving the sound of original V-DAC. The V-DAC II is simply an Astonishing audiodevice. With the Asynchronous USB I have no jitter and the extra audio separation andclarity are superb!!Musical Fidelity has now given the V-DAC II a professional refined clean look tothis device - which it really deserved.Again worth every single penny and by far and away - the Single Best AudioInvestment I have ever made. I want to hear all of my FLAC sources again -this is an incredible device...... still using the same Pyramid power supplywhich is solidly built and running like a rock. Even after hours of heavyusage - it gets only slightly warm.I am very happy with both my Musical Fidelity V-DAC II and my Pyramid power supply- overall an excellent audio device combination!! -:))

I am using it with my imac. I tried both the optical and the USB inputs from a 2008 imac and am feeding its output to a Qinpu A6000 which in turn is driving Cambridge s30 speakers. When I compare it to the iMac 2008 headphone inputs driving the Qinpu to the v-DAC mkii driving it, there is a minuscule improvement (could be imagined). So not clear if its really adding value. Should probably examine other options to see if something better exists.Update: Sep 6 2013:I ordered a HiFimeDIY uae23+ dac (hifimediy.com) based on the Sabre ES9023 DAC from their Oregon warehouse for about 83 dollars shipped from their site (does not come with power supply or usb cord) and even though out-of-the-box it does not have the smoothness of the vdac mkii, I find it a more of "exciting" dac. Very clean, detailed, black background. Superb midrange. YMMV (some might find it more forward, but so far I love it).vdac-mkii is quite boring in comparison and is going back.The hifimediy is also available from Amazon. I bought the V-DAC based on the glowing reviews done by Stereophile, amazon and other online reviewers. I was not disappointed. The sound was good and was exactly as people said, fluid, detailed, rich and a bit laid back.When Stereophile reviewed V-DAC, the $299 was an absolute breakthrough in bring the quality DAC to the people at an affordable price. I know affordable means different things to different folks. For some, a $12,000 DAC is affordable and some $2000. But most people who shop amazon would consider $299 is much more affordable than a $800 or $1200 DAC. After all, Yamaha and Denon have brought us HD-audio capable receivers for less than $300.Well the V-DAC sounds good but it is limited to 16/44 with its adaptive USB interface. It tries to overcome the jitter prone adaptive USB interface with its oversampling DAC and achieves its goal quite well.Until recently, few USB DACs are capable of the asynchronous mode. The ones they do, are all high end products costing many times of the price of the V-DAC, until now.When the HRT Streamer II and M2Tech hiFace came out with the asynchronous USB mode and hi-res music support, the V-DAC is no longer the king in this price bracket. The HRT Streamer II supports 24/96 with the native OS drivers. The hiFace supports 24/192 through its proprietary driver. Both are sold at $150. One can buy both with the price of the V-DAC. I did and love them both.The HRT Streamer II, at 1/2 cost of the V-DAC, sounds every bit as good as the V-DAC and has a fuller sound than V-DAC. It has a more enthusiastic personality than the V-DAC. The hiFace is not a DAC but can work with DACs accepting the 24/192 input which include many AV receivers from Yamaha, Denon and others. The V-DAC would truncate (re-sample) the 24/192 input to 24/96 with its S/PDIF input.

Um es vorweg zu sagen - dieses Gerät verdient was den Audioteil angeht glatte 5 Sterne! Die gebotene Qualität ist bereits mit dem Standard-Netzteil sehr gediegen. Zu diesem Preis dürfte es schwer werden, einen besser klingenden Wandler zu bekommen. Die Klangqualität ist sowohl über die SPDIF-Eingänge (optisch als auch coaxial) als auch vor allem über USB erstklassig.Kritik kann es bei diesem DAC eigentlich nur beim Drumherum geben - hier gibt es wie ich meine schon einiges, was man besser machen könnte. Vieles davon weiß man sicherlich vorher, bevor man das Gerät kauft, aber ich möchte es trotzdem erwähnen:a) das Netzteil: kleiner und billiger ging es nicht mehr - das Teil wird mächtig warm und wenn man die Größe bedenkt, wird schnell klar, dass hier kein hochwertiges Audionetzteil vorliegen kann. Das optionale Netzteil von MF ist preislich keine Alternative - ich werde wohl ein lineares Netzteil mit Ringkerntrafo und ordentlicher Stabilisierung selber aufbauen...In einigen Rezensionen wird ein fiependes Netzteil beklagt - das konnte ich bei meinem nicht nachvollziehen.b) die Buchse des coaxialen SPDIF-Eingangs: diese ist nicht am Gehäuse befestigt, sondern nur auf der Platine verlötet. Da die meisten Chinch-Stecker von Digitalkabeln recht stramm sitzen, ist hier ein Schaden bei häufigem Wechsel des Kabels vorprogrammiert. Warum MF nicht wie beim Audioausgang eine verschraubte Buchse gewählt hat, bleibt mir schleierhaft.c) das Layout der Ein- und Ausgänge: diese auf jeweils gegenüberliegenden Seiten des Gerätes zu haben, macht eine sinnvolle Positionierung im Rack unmöglich - man kann das Teil nur irgendwo in der zweiten Reihe verstecken. Dann den eh schon fummilgen Schalter zwischen SPDIF und USB zu bedienen, wird da schnell zur Akrobatik-Nummer...d) der fummelig kleine Umschalter zwischen SPDIF und USB Eingängene) keine Umschaltmöglichkeit zwischen SPDIF coax und opticalf) kein USB Kabel beiligendMein Fazit: wenn es nicht so verdammt gut klingen würde, wären mir die genannten Abstriche zu viel des Guten. Wenn man jedoch den Schwerpunkt auf die Audioqualiäten legt, dann kommt man an diesem DAC schwer vorbei in dieser Preisklasse. Jeder muss für sich selber entscheiden, welche Gesichtspunkte persönlich mehr wiegen...Audio von mir 5 Punkte, Bedienung, Verarbeitung, Ausstattung noch 3 Punkte - macht in Summe 4!

Acheté pour relier a mon ampli analogique 2 voies a mes sourcestrès bon dac avec l'entrée numérique (PC, PS3), attention, ne gère que le flux stéréo!!!et utilisation en carte son "de luxe" en USB pour écouter des fichier flac, et la le rendu est exceptionnel!prix très abordable pour un DAC de cette qualité avec ces connectiques (USB!)!Conseil : changer l'alim d'origine qui elle est ridicule (alim chinoise de 500mA de moins de 4€) et influe sur la qualité (prendre une 12V, environ 1a idéalement stabilisée, torique...)

Kann ich nur jedem empfehlen, der seine Anlage aufbessern will und das für einen kleinen Preis. Wie schon in anderen Bewertungen zu lesen ist, sind die Erwartungen voll erfüllt worden. In Verbindung mit dem V-Link 192 ein Traumpaar. Natürlich sollte auch das externe Netzteil V-PSU nicht fehlen, da das beiliegende Steckernetzteil doch etwas einfach ist.Ich spiele über diese Kombination Musikfiles (flac bzw. wav) in stereo aus dem PC heraus ab. Klanglich top.

Excellent appareil pour un prix très compétitif en regard de la concurrence.Je n'ai pas fait de comparatif avec d'autres DAC (pas assez riche) mais celui-ci me convient parfaitement.Ce qu'on peut lui reprocher ?Pas de câble fourni (les câbles alourdissent la facture, et pas qu'un peu si on veut de la qualité).Un petit manque de connectiques mais bon à ce prix on va pas lui demander de faire café et vaisselle non plus.Excellent produit.

Ich suchte einen DAC um den Klang der SB3 aufzuwerten und um zusätzlich einen CD/DVDA/SACD Player und vielleicht später einen Media PC anschließen zu können.Ich habe den VDACII als Warehousedeal gekauft, dies macht den Preis attraktiv, mir wurde -abweichend von der Beschreibung- die Limited Edtion zugesendet, wenn auch nicht herauszubekommen ist was der Unterschied sein soll.Eine Woche Aufheiz/Einspielzeit habe ich dem Gerät gegönnt, auch wenns vermutlich nicht viel oder nichts ausmacht.Ich vermute, daß der größere Effekt vom Einhören (Zuhörer gewöhnt sich an den Klang) kommt.Testaufbau:[A] Der SB3 per digital Chinch (Goldkabel) an den VDACII dieser per Stereo Chinch an den Verstärker angeschlossen[B] Der SB3 direkt via Stereo Chinch an den Verstärker angeschlossenDer Verstärker ist ein Cambridge Audio 840a V2, Laustärke/Klangfarbe lässt sich per Eingang einstellen.Meine 10 Teststücke gehört, zwischen A/B umgeschaltet. Hmmm, bei einem Teil der Stücke wirkt der VDAC hmmm presenter.Ich hatte den Eindruck der VDAC ist etwas lauter, ist der Unterschied evtl. nur eine Pegelanhebung um einen dB?Input A um -1dB abgesenkt, erneuter A/B Vergleich und hmm die Klangfarbe ist leicht unterschiedlich. Für Input B einen Tick Bass aufgedreht, ebenso die Höhen.Erneuter A/B Vergleich -> Umschalthelfer hinzugeholt -> A/B Test mit zweiter Person, die zwischen A/B umschaltet und ich schließe beim Hören die Augen.Ergebnis: jetzt kann ich nicht mehr zuordnen ob Sb3+VDACII oder SB3 Endstufe spielt.Beim VDAC würde ich unter Umständen einen Tick Bass und einen Tick Höhen rausdrehen; ist nicht viel.Ich würde sagen, die VDACII ist nicht schlechter als der Wandler+Vorverstärker der in der SB3 enthalten ist,aber auch keine Verbesserung zur SB3 direkt. Je nach Hörgeschmack und Hifikette kann die leichte Überbetonung der Bässe nerven, ist aber korrigierbar.Neue Strategie: SB3 gegen eine SB Touch tauschen und vergleichen.Meine SB3 hängt an einem stabilisierten Labor Netzteil, das originale China Stecker Schaltnetzteil war irgendwann ausgefallen. Lautsprecherkabel waren Eagle Calypso II.
