Very good
This book is an old book from the 50s reprinted with a colour 8 page cover. It is probably hard to beat, written by a geologist. Its divided nicely into chapters dealing with different aspects. He ecplains clearly in laymans terms how the pebbles/stones/sand came to be. The colour section added later is of little use, a colour photo section would have been better, but still worth reading.

Not as many pictures as I would have liked.
I bought this book for my sister for her next birthday. I was a little disappointed. I was expecting it to have lots of pictures, and be a sort of pocket guide to take with you to the beach (she's a real beachcomber). It does have pictures on the fold out cover, which are very nice, but the rest of the book is just very wordy, so I'm not sure it was quite what I was expecting. Very interesting, I'm sure just not the pocket guide I'd wanted.

No photos and few diagrams
Pros: Written in an easy to understand way for an adult. Helped me to understand where pebbles come from and where to find them.Cons: sketches of pebbles make it difficult to identify pebbles that don't match sketches.I bought a copy for myself and my daughter and young grandsons. I doubt it will be useful to my daughter at the beach.

Useful addition to a beach walk
I loved this little book which came out for a 2nd time recently after its original release in the 50's. Perfect for taking with you on beach walks but sadly does NOT cover much of Scotland or Northern Ireland which is where I tend to roam. Also you need to be interested in Geology as it goes in to that in a small way, which I liked but not for every body. The best thing about this book is the handy guide to the most common pebbles found on beaches in the UK in pictorial pull out form, which I just loved.

Avoid - it not what is claimed
While it may be well written as suggested in reviews it a very misleading book. It is a reprint of a very old book. It is not a spotters guide - no photographs and really poor quality drawings. You could never learn to identify a pebble from reading this book and so it pretty useless in that regard.Depite what is claimed on Amazon it is not a hardback but in fact what seems to be e a very cheap paperback.I can not believe that that the Sunday Times gave it a good review.

Magic book , in homage to the pebble.....
Oh why did I never see this book before , it's lovely , very readable , yes you will learn lots , the way you look at the beach waves tides and the pebbles will make you want to rush to beach look for pebbles .... Then you can spend hours putting the puzzle of what they are ... Lovely book not one to finish in few hours one that you could read and read again again ....
