Excellent for fermented foods!
If you are expecting a laboratory grade instrument with NIST traceable standards for under 20 dollars, this is DEFINATELY the wrong item for you. If you are checking/verifying the salinity of your latest batch of fermented pickles or sauerkraut then this is exactly what you need. This is a lower range scale to check the salinity of foods. And in the lacto-fermentation world you want to verify what the salt level is in your brine. This will do it with acceptable accuracy and at a very acceptable price. I referenced it to distilled water (0%) and different w/v salt ratios and it was pretty darn close and exactly what I needed. Not bad for M.I.C too.

Wow just wow
We were trying to get our syrup right and as a home producer didn't want to loose lots of syrup to check sugar content. We finish in the microwaveso the temperature method was not an option. Two drops that's it. You look for where the color changes from blue to white. Easily accurate to 1%. I checked some comecial maple syrup and it was 65% right on. Ours was already calibrated, which is simple. Cleanining is a snap and it comes in a nice case, with an eye dropper and a adjustment screw driver.

Easy to use
It is simple t o use. We bought it to check tbe brix of jams we produce and it seems adaquate to that task. Calibration however is just adjusting the zero point and the set screw is hard to engage with the screw driver provided. Fortunately the zero did not need adjustment. There is no need to use distilled water to set the zero as the refractive index of tap water is so close to distilled water relative to yhat of brix of > 30%. Case latch is stiff and somewhat difficult to open. This is a minor issue

Works well to test sorbets.
I use this to check the sugar content of sorbets to ensure good consistency of the finished dessert. This meter works well with opaque, pureed fruit -- and the price was great.

it seems to be very accurate and was easy to calibrate
I bought this to test the sugar content in mandarin oranges that we grow. So far, it seems to be very accurate and was easy to calibrate.
