In Sicario 2: Soldado, the drug war on the US - Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) reteams with the mercurial Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro). Review: Astounding crime drama - I watched the original 'Sicario' in the cinema when it first came out and knew I was witnessing a cinematic masterpiece-I purchased the DVD and soundtrack as soon as it became available. When I learned that a sequel was being made-'Sicario 2: Soldado,' I was super-excited, to say the least. I originally watched Soldado on a streaming platform and whilst I thought it was a decent film, I didn't think it was a patch on the first. When I saw that desertcart was selling the DVD for a ridiculously low price, I thought it was an offer too good to refuse. Having given Soldado a second viewing, it has started to grow on me, and I'm now of the opinion that it is as good as the first film (but maybe not better). Benicio Del Toro (whose acting is phenomenal in both films) and Joshn Brolin are perfectly cast, and the film has the familiar haunting moody soundtrack. There's essentially two storylines in this film. One is focused on Matt (Brolin) and Alejandro (Del Toro) being recruited by the U.S. government to secretly wage war on the Mexican drugs cartels by a strategy of "divide and conquer," which encompasses them kidnapping the daughter of a cartel boss under the guise that it was done by a rival cartel, to try and turn the cartels against each other. There's no rules of engagement and they're essentially given the green light to go on a psychopathic murdering spree, although they do show some restraint at times. The other storyline focuses on a young kid who lives on the border and is being groomed by people smugglers into joining their criminal gang, and his path ultimately converges with Alejandro in an explosive riveting scene. The ending of the film is terrific and wasn't what I was expecting at all. Taylor Sheridan is a screenplay writing genius-I'm also a big fan of 'Wind River' and I've purchased 'Hell or High Water' simply because he was the mastermind behind Sicario. Review: BRILLIANT SEQUEL TO SICARIO - I loved Sicario so, when Sicario 2 came out, I was pleased to add it to my collection. I'm a fan of both Benicio Del Toro (Alejandro) and Josh Brolin (Matt Garver) as they are very talented actors. Usually, a sequel doesn't really live up to expectations, but this one surpasses its predecessor by a mile. It's jam packed with action, intrigue, double-dealing and a plethora of underhand moves. Battling drug cartels who have appear to have moved into trafficking terrorists into the US, the government needs something done to curb them. Garver comes up with a very dodgy idea - but it's taken on board and it's given the green light. What follows is a scenario that drives a wedge between the two men. The ending is one massive surprise. Loved it.

Falls just short of the mark, but worth a watch
This sequel is a good film and if you’ve bought into the characters from the 1st film you will enjoy this second outing. However Emily Blunts character is missed quite a lot in my opinon and if there is a third instalment needs to be re introduced.

War on Drugs
What a relief to see an intelligent movie dealing with the drug trade. While Trump wants to build a wall to stop drugs coming over the broader, the reality is, the war on drugs is never ending. I thought Sicario 1, was a very good film that showed the darker side to the good fight, but here the dirty war is turned up to 11. The cartels have all but taking over parts of Mexico, and this movie shows the tip of the iceberg of criminal life on the US and Mexican border. Does this stuff really go on?... Oh hell yeah... Again, an intelligent movie, that you don't have to leave your brain at home to watch.

Even better than the first
I enjoyed all the scheming and plotting and the usual way in which the politicians, who initiate the 'dirty war' in the first place, get cold feet when the reality of all the killing sinks in. This is not an out and out action movie, nor was it meant to be - it's an exploration of what constitutes terrorism and how far some people are willing to go to either further it or combat it. It's also about corruption and betrayal, both at a political and personal level. How can this not make for an interesting watch?

Not really what it says on the tin
The film starts off as described on the DVD box - some suicide bombers in the US, and a captured Somali warlord which gives grounds for suspecting that Mexican drug cartels are smuggling terrorists into America. A high level decission is made to start a no holds barred 'black operation' to start some kind of war between the cartels. So far so good. That was about it, as the rest of the film was largely devoted to the travails following a cartel bosses daughter being kidnapped as part of the op - with the scene being set for a future film involving a young boy who got into bed with the bad guys.

Not quite as bad as was made out to be on release?
Many other reviewers have written at greater length on why "No 2. Soldado" is not as great as the first "Sicario" but what surprised me on watching the DVD is that after all the critical panning it received on original release (which is why I did not bother to go to the cinema to watch) is overall how good it still is! I watched the DVD with my brother who had not seen the first film and so did not know the backstory. Our conclusion at the end was that this was one of the better action movies (acting, script, cinematography and soundscape especially) that we had seen for a few months. The intricate plotting of the first film may not be here but Taylor Sheridan given the films he has been involved with to date still knows how to make characters complicated even if the story line is not in this case. With a different director and Director of Photography I was concerned this would look and feel like a "Son of" follow up but overall I doubt this will have done the "Sicario" franchise too much harm and the ending clearly sets up for a third follow on. Indeed I now look forward to where the story will be taken next!

Not even close to the quality of the first movie
Without Denis Villeneuve this movie is just a violent copy of the first movie. I quit watching after the first 20 minutes. The story didn't made any sence to me. The cast looked tired. They probably did this movie because it was in their contract........ May be someone else likes this movie. I do not.
