Original Ballpoint Pen-In-Box (849.069)

The 849 comes in a snazzy, low profile metal case with a medium point, blue Goliath ballpoint cartridge. I'm not a fan of medium points so I ordered a fine point refill, however the medium point is not overly broad. From the photos it seems that the barrel has a matte finish but it is very smooth and glossy. The pen is not hefty yet it is not so light that it feels cheap. While writing the ink flows smoothly regardless of pressure or speed. I tend to write with a light hand and I have not had issues with globs or missed strokes. My biggest concern is that I'm going to misplace it. Good thing it comes with the case!

The 849 is my favorite ballpoint pen ever. The design is classic and the build quality is superb. Unlike the usual 849, the "original" series has a modified clip that allows it to clip into a jeans pocket. Gift box is cool--magnetic closure, velvet lined, form fit for the pen. The clip and button are satin finish and look very nice. The body finish is lacquered and smooth, not rough like it might look in the picture. It's very elegant and I'm very happy with it. For people who haven't had an 849 before, the hexagonal barrel is very comfortable with a tripod grip, but if you don't have a traditional grip you might not like it. Width is pretty much the same as a typical #2 pencil. Weight is fairly light. Click button is silent, which is awesome in the workplace. I highly recommend this ballpoint.

None of the stock photos are accurate. It's not just another sparkle-gray color as so many ugly products have. It looks like old beat-up corroded metal. The color is a very dark gray. Then it has a smooth clear coating over that. The pocket clip and button don't make any sense. They are a matted/bead-blasted finish as you find on a lot of very cheap products (not the simple smooth finish on other versions of this pen). I hate the cheap look I expect on junk, and regardless of one's like or dislike of matte gray it doesn't make any sense to have an extreme antiqued finish on the body, but then have a button and clip which are done in the style of a new modern low-cost item. I buffed down the surface to get a shiny but darker color.

Excellent, attractive pen. The Caran D'ache ballpoint refill is first rate - very smooth, one of my favorites. Retraction mechanism is plastic and does not have a firm, satisfying click, but it works well and does not deploy too easily. The only negative is that this comes with a blue refill, whereas I prefer black.

If you haven't picked one of these up you should right this minute. I have used Caran D'ache pens for a couple of years now and can't imagine using any other pen. From the way they feel if your hand when writing to the quality of ink in the pen these are top quality all around.

A classic pen, reminiscent of my childhood. Extremely well made, beautiful writing. Writes as well as a Montblanc for a fraction of the price.

For the money this is an outstanding pen! It's mechanism is smooth as silk and writes like a charm.

Great pen

Eigentlich ist dieser Kugelschreiber ja ziemlich simpel und gnadenlos überteuert. Man zahlt für den Namen. Drei Dinge sind es allerdings, die mir sehr gut gefallen: Er ist sehr leicht, das Design sozusagen ikonisch und vor allem - das hat eigentlich gar nichts mit dem Kuli zu tun: Die Minen von Caran d'Ache schreiben sehr gut, ohne aber an der Spitze Klumpen zu bilden. Dies ist bei meinen ansonsten hochwertiger wirkenden Lamys leider nicht der Fall. Dort muss man immer kurz die Spitze reinigen und ein paar Striche ziehen, bevor man anfängt zu schreiben. Die Caran d'Ache-Minen funktionieren besser, sodass dieser Kugelschreiber zu meinem Favoriten geworden ist. Eine Anmerkung dazu: Leider sind die Minen nicht kompatibel, da kochen die Hersteller jeweils ihr eigenes Süppchen.

The "Original" version is one of the most beautiful pens I've ever seen. As you turn the barrel it catches the light in unexpected ways, and is a delight for the eyes. It's also quite light - this is a good thing - and pairs well with the grey 849 mechanical pencil. The Goliath refill is not bad, too.

Superb quality ballpoint pen - a timeless design presented in a 'crackle' finish raw aluminium hexagonal barrel that is secure and smooth to hold, and with the 'goliath' refill writes smoothly and evenly for page after page. The button and pocket clip are in a matt finish to complement the barrel colour. Completely silent reliable action, so no annoying 'clicks' in meetings when you are taking notes - this is a classic pen from a quality manufacturer ! Nice bespoke metal case with this model too - shame it doesn't hold more than the one pen

Conosco e uso da anni le penne Caran d'Ache, sono strumenti di scrittura molto tattili e piacevoli nella loro semplicità, mi è piaciuto molto la nuova confezione da collezione, la consiglierei a chi cerca una penna semplice ,scorrevole e piacevole da usare.

It may be the original pen but I am terribly disappointed
