Don't believe all the critics! Second best zombie game next to Last of Us.
I pre-ordered this game as soon as I saw it at E3. I played about an hour when it arrived and put it down due to all the bad press I saw it getting. Critics tend to be overly critical about things. You never really see games in the middle, it's either a 10 or a 0 with very little in between. How critics are able to complete games of this size within what I assume is less than a week and portray an accurate picture of the game is beyond me. In fact I'm pretty sure most of them never complete the games in their entirety. And people on here posting 1 star reviews when they haven't barely played it is ridiculous. How can you review a game that can take 60 to 80 hours in a day's worth of playing it and have any informed opinion of it? Thankfully I picked it back up again and played through it over a month. I heard about all the bugs and things people found wrong with it. Frankly I think some people complain just for the sake of complaining. As gamers we have become spoiled. If a game doesn't release on the date it's supposed to we complain, if it does release early to satisfy gamers we complain about the bugs they didn't have time to fix. As a software engineer myself and one that works in quality assurance I see a ton of bugs and almost every day something is broken. It's not because the people at Bend are not good at their job, it's because software development with lot's of employees and tight deadlines causes mistakes. That's just the nature of the business. Too many cooks in the kitchen. But games of this size need large studios to do the work so sometimes you have to overlook the flaws to find the good these people have done. After waiting for a while before starting again, it gave them time to fix bugs. Other than the image freezing every now and then to load things into memory (playing on original PS4 and wasn't a game breaker for me) I never had any other bugs occur. I enjoyed the combat, the motorcycle upgrades, the beautiful graphics, the characters, the realism (no wacky/goofy weapons) and the story was a lot better than some people let on. I wanted a AAA game like State of Decay but actually good. This delivered for me in a market full of crap zombie games. Yes the game loop got repetitive (think Assassin's Creed) but the story kept me engaged. And if you look really hard enough, every game out there has a game loop. That's how they are made. If studios had to craft every element of a game to be a unique style of play that didn't repeat you'd be waiting for a decade for a game to come out. Don't believe all the negativity out there. Try things yourself and form your own opinions. Critics are not always the best source of information as everyone has their own opinions about what they like.

A well-developed game that balances elements of survival and action
I'll try to keep this review relatively brief, as much of the game's charm is learning the ropes as you go. I find games that don't hold your hand from the beginning to be some of the best games on the market. Let's start with the GOOD: - The voice acting is superb (10/10) - a rare feat in today's gaming industry. The characters are extremely well developed. Each character has their own backstory, distict quirks/flaws, as well as redeeming qualities. ...... - Graphics (9/10): It's not as gorgeous as Red Dead Redemption 2, but is very well designed for an open world game. The map is based off a city in Oregon. The setting is very rustic and rural - ranging from a heavily wooded recreational area (camping and lodging), to deserty plains, to snowy mountains. Each offering different weather effects and challenges. ...... - Gameplay (8.5/10): This is probably the most subjective part of my review. This game is a slow-paced, learn-as-you go adventure. Combat is a lot of fun, which is my favorite aspect of this game. Ammo is relatively limited is the sense that you cannot go long stints of fighting without having to replenish. However, ammo is extremely accessible and you will never run out of it, it's just a matter of how much you can carry at a time before having to buy more. There is also a survival mechanic where you will need to refuel your bike ever so often. This is not a big pain as gas is pretty prevelant and can usually be found on any main road. During my playthrough I may have ran out gas twice, and both times were really exciitng! I had to make my way down a road with limited gear, no chance to escape a giant horde if I happen to come across one, all in hopes to find a tank of gas. This is the best aspect of the game in my opinion. Sometimes there may be very few enemies around and sometimes there may be hundreds, you just never know. The last gameplay mechanic I was to touch on is the combat. It is a typical 3rd person shooter with a weapon wheel toggle menu to switch between gear. You will be able to hold a *primary* weapon, *sidearm*, and *special* weapon. Each weapon will be designated one of those three tags, so you cannot carry three assault rifles lol. There are also Throwables- I.e. molotovs, pipe bombs, frag grenades | Defensive Items- I.e flashbang, smoke grenade, attractors | Traps: I.e. proxy mines, bear traps | and Health Items The game offers a "bullet-time" function which slows down time for easier aiming and concentrating fire. This is called Focus. You can upgrade your overall points in three areas -- Health, Stamina and Focus. Health does not recover over time, you cannot sleep to replenish health and the only means to restore it is using bandages/health syrums/medics. Everything can be crafted using certin ingredients found out in the wilderness. Looters heaven :D ...... - Sound (9/10): The reverb in the game is great. Much of your survival will depend on your attention to sounds (whether it be you making the sounds or hearing sounds around you). If you have stereo surround sound then you be rewarded! Every enemy makes a distict noise and they will be delivered directionally which will help you pin point where a guy might be hiding without being able to see them. The music is mostly ambient (to help you hear environmental sounds easier) but is also played dynamically. By that I mean it will cue you in on danger up ahead by slowly ramping up and intensifying as you get closer to that danger. It will begin to play when in close proximity to enemies and again will ramp up once you engage with that enemy. The more enemies that are around you the more tense the music will get. -- Final thoughts -- Days Gone is a beautifully written story with a strong ephasis on character development and emotion. This is a survival game at its core, but is also action-oriented where you can go guns blazing if you wish. I tend to kill everything in sight since I love the combat. The developers released a COMPLETE game at launch. Very few hardware glitches (if any at all). No bugs - except for one mission - you can look it up on your own if your curious. Nothing serious though, so don't you worry! There are no plans to release any DLC because there really is no need for it. The game is that well designed. I believe they are in the works on making a Days Gone 2, so if you end up enjoying this as much as I did, then you'll be happy to know a sequal is right around the corner :D

Ok so a friend of mine put me into this game. They’re not wrong at all. Everything from the soundtrack to the graphics is amazing. You can be as cautious as you like or get straight up fighting. Be warned tho it can be easy to get surrounded if you don’t keep an eye on the surroundings. From hordes of zombies to crazy crows and insanely fast wolves this game has it all. With a sweet ride that you can personalise and camp jobs to be done for credit it gives a realistic feel to what life would be like if something like this actually happened. The story itself is great (not gonna spoil any of it). It’s more than a mind numbing running around zombie bashing game. You have to strategically plan how you’ll clear enemy camps, critically check you’ve disabled loud speaks to give you a chance of securing loot. You need to think of the environment as well. Is it better to clear a camp during the day or at night? Dry or raining? Especially if you’re short on health and bullets. Let’s face it a un-upgraded 2x4 isn’t going to last long. I haven’t stopped playing it since I got it. From hunting for meat and plants to clearing camps there is always something to do if you don’t want to run main missions.
