Decent low cost compass
My son needed a compass for Scouts as they do a lot of map reading and navigation. I tried a cheap one thinking it would be ok, but was rather dismayed at the time and care needed for the needle to settle and even then it often seemed to catch on the body of the compass when changing direction. Just not accurate enough. This little Silva was almost double the price but well worth it! It reads confidently, the needle doesn't stick and is well-damped. It is easy to sight and stays stable when moving. Markings are clear and useful. A simple, compact and great little basic compass.

I've not been lost in Dollar Glen since I got it
Not that I've been there since I did, but I also didn't get lost in the woods round by Falkirk Wheel and other similar woody places I've been. Works when your phone GPS gives up.

Perfect for the job!
I was really impressed! It’s transparent, so you can easily see where you need to be on the map, which is very handy. It’s extremely accurate and the needle is rapid! (Had a much less accurate compass and you had to give the needle 5-10 seconds to catch up when you changed direction. Not ideal)So off we went to test the new bit of kit! I was very excited…‘Oh Daddy, thank God you brought your new compass with you! Otherwise we would be lost! We love you Daddy! You’re our hero!’That’s pretty much how I hoped it would go as we were trekking through The Peak District one Sunday afternoon. But no, instead the kids just laughed at me because I had hung it around my neck.‘Daddy you look so silly!’‘Daddy why is it round your neck?’‘Oh Daddy you’re so embarassing.’And so I decided It was time to head off on my own and leave them there. It’s been 3 weeks and I’ve not heard anything yet…Who’s laughing now?

Good quality compass
Bought this for hiking. It has all the functions you need without being too complicated. I chose Silva because my last compass (years ago) was that brand and served me well.

Perfect for a spare or a beginner
Sure, it's missing a lot of features, but this isn't designed to be a primary compass. However it is pocket sized and cheap enough for a first compass or a backup for when your phone dies.

Small compass
This is a nice lightweight compass but I regret buying it. I should have bought a proper sighting compass.
