Best Addition To Guild Wars So Far
I'm a fanatic Guild Wars (GW) player. Having played through Prophecies and Factions and now digging into Nightfall, I can say that this latest addition is better than Factions and I'm already in love with it. Although I've been playing it for only two weeks. Anyone already familiar with GW will know that the gameplay is the same for all extentions, so I'll not go into this matter as it has been reviewed many times. To the new players, see the two previous chapters for review about gameplay. Now a word about Nightfall: the leveling up system is not that drastic as in Factions; you'll be able to level up your character but it will take longer than it did in Factions. Instead of taking henchmen who do not evolve through the game, you now have access to heroes that will evolve! Also you can adjust their skills, armour and weapons, giving you a party that's tuned for your needs. The only negative arguement about this, is that you'll be playing on your own instead of teaming up with other players. Which, according to me, is the main reason to play an on-line game. The enemies are tough but not impossible to beat, just about right. They also became more intellegent; they run away in dangerous situations, they dispel enchantment you have on yourself and use their abilities more often. Another treat you get if you buy the collectors edition is that you get a miniature pet (which contributes nothing to combat, but is nice to have), you get a box with 2 extra CD's (a music CD and a documentary), a very good artbook and some other minor stuff. The in-game difference is that your dance is completly different from the other dances. For those you don't know what i'm talking about, your character can do certain things in-game like playing music, dancing, jumping...etc while waiting for other players to join. I highly recommend this addition which has kept me again hooked to my PC.

Exquisitely presented and not half bad....
As an MMO newbie (or, to go back a generation, a MMPORPG virgin), the purchase of Nightfall was clearly going to shape my view, in a fairly fundamental fashion, on whether playing against a bunch of humans, and all the wierdness that entails, is really worth the effort. Surely I couldn't have resisted the hype of World of Warcraft? Well, if it hadn't been for the fee, I wouldn't have (just being honest) - yep, it was a quick scan of reviews on the web, and then a no-brainer for me as there are absolutely zilch monthly fees with this game. So, is it a game or yet another wanderaboutathon staring at inanimate avatars and immobile 'in stasis' players until finally, through the gloom of despair, you finally get asked to join a party, or, for the more go-getter amongst us, you finally get a response to your 150th attempt and broadcasting yourself as 'ready to whoop some harpy's backside'? (breathe) Actually, if I had to sum up my past three weeks episodes on Nightfall, Collector's Edition, I would have to say that it's been 'pleasant'. I don't mean that in a demeaning way at all - I've met loads of people. I've spent the odd half hour telling (appalling) jokes to everyone at the Jokanna Diggings - and I'd have to say that well over half my jaunts into the wilderness have been with 2 or more human counterparts. With the exception of one (you know who you are - curse you) none of them were the sit-back-and-let-you-die type. The storage system works well - and the trading is pretty well continuous. If you "got the plats" you can get pick up the rarest and most sought-after items in no time. You also feel that your efforts are worth it - to continously slaughter the same old wee beasties time after time will net you (eventually) zero experience, but on pushing back the boundaries a bit, you get a nice reverse exponential curve of reward against a fairly steady rise in character advancement. Some of the views are stunning - and this thing runs well on my system - a LAPTOP!!! Shock! Horror! 1 gb of ram, and an AMD Sempron 1.8 equivalent, and a (let me check....) ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 gcard is more than machine enough for the job. So, graphics good - animations good - what else. Character interaction is unobtrusive - if you want to play a truly solo game - you can (although, trust me, you're missing out). You simply wander into an encampment, hire up some heavies and set off without a word to anyone. If you want to join a party, just advertise yourself - you'll either get in or you wont (and you normally do after a few minutes perseverance). So, this brings me to the crux of it: Guild wars is, and always has been, a two-faceted affair - missions or player versus player (pVp). You can 'only' reach level 20 (although you can still improve yourself thereafter, just not in a numerical sense), and when you finally reach the twenty mark - you can set off into pVp land. If you're not up to that level of time investment (several hours/days/weeks depending on how much spare time you've got) - you can start out at level 20 straight away and join the warring factions. I would encourage anyone to plow through the 'single' player side though; team up with a few people on missions, work up the ranks together, and join forces against the (cue orchestral music) warrior foes that think they're better than you. It's good - and it will take up your hours, but you'll also find that, after the honeymoon period, you find yourself not playing for a few days or more. Fret not, it pulls you back in eventually, and then you're back in the swing of it - saving up for a gold bow of (insert magic-related description here) or simply to take on that grub lance that you've always had an issue with.... Downsides...well, it isn't perfect - there's a lag on startup (but soon settles down) and to begin with, you really don't get much of a clue on how best to get going (even though the Collector's edition documentation is stunning - it really doesn't present the information up front, to the newbie, as it should. Trust me, I do just that for a living). Some of the missions can seem a tad samey - and until you get used to checking your quests, and making sure you select them, the guiding star on the compass can be confusing (but once you understand it, it's a godsend). It's not a bad community either - there's never a shortage of guildmasters looking for new recruits (I joined one on my second day) and, although it sometimes feels that joining a guild isn't up to much other than getting a fancy identifying cape - when you work out how to "guild v guild" it's terrific fun. World of Warcraft beater - no idea, haven't played it. Not likely to for a while either.

Guild Wars isn't as active as it once was but it's still brilliant. Nightfall is a great start for any player
Been playing this game for 11 years. If you've never played it before but are after an mmorpg then please get Guild Wars. I purchased this specifically because I'd previously purchase Nightfall and wanted the Collectors Edition. Guild Wars isn't as active as it once was but it's still brilliant. Nightfall is a great start for any player. Don't hesitate, get it!

It is addictive and you will look forward to evenings spent online.
My first experience of an Online Role Playing Game. Easy to install and set up on a modest XP system. Quite a learning curve to play but fun doing so. After the tutorial it felt a bit like the first day at school ,arriving in this big magical world with everyone else running around knowing exactly what they are doing and where they are going. However other players are friendly and helpful. There is also a useful help system provided by pressing F10. (By the way, there is no 'walk' option in this game you run everywhere!) I bought my girlfriend a copy too (as she loves gaming and loved 'Dungeon Siege' and 'Neverwinter Nights' which in some ways this game resembles). After browsing a few web pages for advice we found it fairly easy to meet up online and go off adventuring using the player controlled 'Hero' and 'Henchmen' options to boost the numbers in our party. Communication is by text. Most non-player characters use text to communicate (as opposed to voice acting) which takes getting used to. Heroes have various commands you can click on. Game play is addictive. You can dive straight in and have fun or explore the complexities of skills, attributes, weapons and upgrades. You can have quick short games or long epics. Player character selections are all human (no orcs, reptillians etc..) and their faces are all quite similar and a bit too 'pretty pretty' and pouting for my taste (but this is a minor complaint and easily forgotten once you start playing). Graphics are effective with nice details, I found myself stopping to just look closely on several occasions. It's great to have a game with African inspired themes and characters. A few extras like the Art book are pleasant to browse through, a good map. The included 'making of' DVD is interesting, the developers seem like nice people who really love what they are doing. I have no use for the cardboard cutout figure or badges which I will probably give to my nephew. It is addictive and you will look forward to evenings spent online. No monthly fee is great! Have fun, I may see you in the game... Regards Mike aka "Sea Reel"

The Journey Continues
An MMORPG for existing Guild Wars players Or those who have never played before. If you've played the other campaigns in the Guild Wars series and wondering if you should buy this one or not, I would strongly recommend you do. This takes the game play further than before with the introduction of controllable heroes from the start. More skills, Items and weapons, and two new professions the Paragon and Dervish. Not to mention new guild locations, new land to explore...list is quite long. The graphics are stunning and the sound and music compliment everything nicely. At some points you'll find yourself just looking at the scenery. It is an excellent continuation for your existing game characters Or if you have never played Guild Wars don't worry, it's a new story line and has a helpful tutorial at the start for those not familiar with the game. You don't need the others to enjoy this. What makes Guild Wars stand out from other MMO games aswell as it game play is the fact that it's free to play online. All you pay for is the game. As for the Collectors Edition, you will not be disappointed. Nicely presented, the package comes with a number of goodies that any Guild Wars fan would love. To start, you'll get two large posters one of which is the map of Elona. A Card standee, Two skill pin badges Paragon and Dervish, that to my knowledge you can't get anywhere else. A players guild to nightfall, an amazing book on the art of nightfall (if your into that sort of thing) CD of the game with the access key, the music soundtrack to the game by Jeremy Soule and a DVD of the making of Nightfall which again for any fan, is a must see. This really is a lovely package to have part of your Guild Wars collection. Even if you have the Game already, the collectors edition with all of its goodies pays for itself. A great price for a great bundle.

world of what?
this game is one of the best mmo (CORP precisely) out there, this doesn use the normal exploits of other mmos such as payin monthly, these set of missions is the middle on in terms of length (the longest being the orignal guild wars [prophercies] and hte shortest being factions]) but by no means is it any easier...i spend days on a mission with different parties mainly cos it was hard in parts, and unlike any other mmos it isnt about time spent on the game its more about skill, this is done by havin a low lvl cap (lvl 20 max) and only allowin 8 skills to take with you from a whole host of skills from your primary profession and your secondary (think of it as being a soldier as a healer at the same time...thats what im kinda sayin.) and dont think just because there is a low level cap that, thats all there is cos the mission will get harder as you go on, and yes you have the aid of better AI heroes, but they will get harder and make you think of how to tackle certain enemies, rather than rushin head first into them. This game has a massive replayablity, with you being able to choose from 8 professions (the scythe wielding dervish [and lemme tell you they look COOL] and the javelin throwin paragon [which acts like a long distance warrior] are the new professions), the fact that even though it doesnt have fee the people at A-net still treats this game with constant updates (not too constant taht you find youself downloading them evry wednesday) and it has special even 3 times per month which could be extra faction points in pvp, better drop, more xp (though its not that big a deal) etc... though this game is release pre-WoW it still packs a massive punch. This game should be bought by: 1) rpg fans with an internet connection 2) any one who owns the previous guild wars 3) someone who is quitting a larger mmo (i wont say which but i think you all know what it is) 4) someone who like to pvp 5) anyone who wants to get into the mmorpg scene 6) anyone who like the FF series (trust me you can do the whole campaign as single player and its definatly like FF minus the gravity defying hair and wierd weapons)

Better than Factions, but not as good as the Original
Second 'expansion' of the game, story is better than the Oriental-mashup-style of Factions. Some new skills Dwindling player base, the ones still playing are probably ones who have tried Guild Wars 2 but doesn't want to move to a diferent game.
