Pearson's Canal Companion: Leeds & Liverpool - West Yorkshire Waterways (2022) (Canal Companions)

Looks a very comprehensive guide to the L & L Canal. May have more to say when we have done the bike ride along the canal later in the summer.

Very detailed and informative with an entertaining writing style. Only criticism would be that routes which would appear on a geographical map as travelling in an east to west direction appear on the page showing left to right, which I found difficult to get my head round. (i.e. route showing from Leeds to port of Liverpool located on the west side of the UK displays as Leeds on the left of the page and locations towards Liverpool travelling towards the right side of the page) Perhaps this is the norm with canal books? Not sure as this is the first one I've ever looked at. Compass direction notations are shown on the routes.

I agree with the first review. The author says that the maps aren't 'slavishly North orientated' making following them unnecessarily complicated. I am a confident map reader and believe map orientation is the very first basic step in know where you are and where you're going. It would have been far more useful to start in Liverpool and travel West to East with North uppermost. The poor orientation of the maps takes away from the interesting commentary and additional information.

An absolute must if you’ve not been on a barge holiday before.Its a mine of information from where to fill up the water to where to eat and shop.

A useful book, spoilt by the unnecessary and counterintuitive way of presenting maps in a haphazard way of randomly having north in different directions. Written guide is good in compensation but you’ll need to buy a proper map not to be driven nuts!

Used these guides when actively boating, and bought this as was an extended version of my older one. Easy to follow and very informative and would definitely recommend any of this series if you are travelling on the UK waterways.
