Long live macrame
Macrame for Home Decor is a tutorial crafting guide for home dec macramé by Samantha Grenier. Released 11th June 2019 by Pepperell Braiding Co. and Fox Chapel, it's 144 pages and available in paperback format. This is an appealing and well written tutorial for learning the skills necessary to complete any of the 40 included projects. The introduction and basic tools and materials guides (~18% of the page content) cover sourcing supplies and learning the basics of macramé. The following chapters are split into project categories and include: home decor, mats and rugs, plant hangers, and decorative wall hangings. For anyone who lived through the 70's and for whom the word macramé summons to mind 'rustic' jute plant hangers in lime green, orange, and russet brown, this book is full of completely updated and modern/neutral color schemes and projects which will look good in modern homes. It includes large projects such as chair backs and room dividers, along with smaller projects such as placemats and coasters. The layout and typesetting are appealing and accessible. The instructions are very clearly written and easy to follow and, more importantly for visual learners, very well photographed. The weaving and knotting diagrams are well drawn and simple to follow. Of the 40 projects, probably half of them really appealed to me and that's unusually high. These are nice projects and can be adapted to suit any decor. Each of the projects includes a difficulty level, a project time estimate, a bullet list of supplies, and step by step directions. The end of the book includes a very short supplies resource list, and readers will also have no trouble sourcing necessary tools and gear via internet e-tailers or local crafts/hobby suppliers. It amused me to see that although the book is well updated for modern readers, it does include an homage to 70s culture, the perennially undying macrame owl.Four stars. There's a lot to like here.Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Great Projects, Easy to Follow
Macrame for Home Décor is truly a book with 40 Stunning Projects for Stylish Decorating by Samantha Grenier and Pepperell Braiding Company. From projects that are simple such as the plant hangers to the more elaborate comfy chair, there is something for everyone. It gave clear directions that were simple to follow so that the project I tried turned out wonderful.I like the colored photographs and the detail description of the supplies that could be used. Also the knotty level guide was helpful. But the very best was the knot illustrations that had different colors for the different threads. Perhaps that is common but I had not seen that in directions on sites such as Pinterest. It made keeping the knot simple and easy to follow. While I loved the chair, I may never try that one but the plant hangers especially the air plant hanger was fun and easy to do with the right materials. I thought the different owls for wall hangings looked as if older children would enjoy doing too.The publisher through Net Galley provided an ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

Good collection of basic knots, lacks some information
I'd been looking for a macrame knot guide for a while and found most information on the internet to be scattered, poorly curated, or still using badly lit B&W photos from macrame's last heyday. I borrowed this book from my local library, and it makes a decent, though incomplete, update. The first 28 pages cover materials and basic knot instructions, leaving the remaining book for uncluttered project information. The next ~90 pages are the practical items: plant hangers, a chair back and room divider (one using a popular IKEA chair, the other constructed from IKEA shelves), rugs & mats, etc. The last 30 pages are for artsy wall hangings. The good:-Knot explanations are good. Diagrams are (mostly) clear. The most complicated knot is a Josephine.-The more practical projects are decent and modern looking, and done in typical cord.-Includes instructions for a "plant hanger loop" which many macrame sources skip in favor of just using a wood or metal ring. Bonus!-Nice clear photos with modern styling and without the wasted whitespace of some modern craft books. The bad:-No explanation of how to make a simple wrap knot. It is named in several places, diagrammed as part of tassel making, but not described and not included with the knots.-No explanation of how to substitute knots or whether some use more cord than others, or how to use a switch knot for anything other than color changes.-Editing could be better. I haven't read through all the projects, but there's already an obvious typo in the knotting instructions (being vs begin) and an error in the double strand Josephine knot diagram (follow the single strand diagram instead).-The wall hanging section makes use of many alternate materials for embellishment (fabric scraps, eyelet lace, etc) that obscure the knotting – needed a second project photo in basic cord, even if done at a smaller scale.-The "wall hangings" are creative, but the massive hula-hoop based dreamcatcher and owl projects are niche.-There's 12 plant hanger projects in this book, and at least 3 are the same technique done in different materials. Redundant, and the space could have been used for the missing info mentioned above.-While beads (and requirements for a macrame bead) are mentioned in the supplies, only one project, a wallhanging, actually makes use of one. It also remarkably offers a substitution of using … a wrap knot!A little more generic guidance would have been helpful – how to estimate cord lengths when modifying various projects for size or knot density for instance. Modern usage of beads would have been a nice addition. Not a bad book for an adventurous beginner, but you'll still want to supplement with other resources.
