I want to store some pungent spices - is this tin completely air tight?

It is as airtight as any tin - it does not have any extra seal but certainly keeps biscuits from going stale

The lid is not hinged, it removes entirely and is quite a tight fit. This is a beautiful box and is a delight to display on your dressing table. It would be equally lovely to use as a sweet or biscuit tin.

Is it dishwasher safe?

As safe as any other tin one would put in the dishwasher. Probably better to clean with warm soapy water.
