Easy way to reuse old drives and get fast storage
I used this enclosure to turn an old laptop SSD into an external drive and it worked instantly. Installation was tool-free, the case feels solid, and transfer speeds are really fast with USB-C. It’s compact, doesn’t get hot, and is perfect for backups or extra storage on the go.

Fast and Easy Setup - Exactly as advertised
I've been working on a more hands-on cord cutter project. I've been a Tivo customer for years for OTA DVR and various streaming services and use Plex as a media server for Movie content. As a long time IT professional I wanted to put together a system that I could have more integration, specifically personal movie content and OTA DVR. I purchased a Raspberry Pi and loaded it with Plex. Attached it to my Synology NAS which had my movie content and all was good. I then added a TV tuner and also stored OTA programs on the NAS. Performance and quality was not good and certainly not on par with the Tivo. After some analysis it came to the conclusion that the NAS storage just could not provide the performance I needed for recording hi def content OTA in mpeg2 format which is large and inefficient, but the format that you have to live with without a tuner with hardware transcoding. I had a 500 Gig WD SSD from a laptop that died. I decided to get an external USB doc and use that to record DVR content. After reviewing many different brands and reading hundreds of review I decided on the Ugreen. I couldn't be more pleased. Amazon delivered it next day!!! Even in the midst of this Covid-19 nightmare. I had the drive mounted in the dock, attached to the Pi, formatted and attached to the Plex server in about 20 mins. I had no issues with the supplied USB cable as other have reported. Recorded OTA content is now perfect and as good or better quality that I get with the Tivo. Sorry Tivo, but I'm about to cut $20 / month from your revenue. I should note that I am in no way disparaging the Synology NAS. I have a DS216se, their small 2 disk system and love it. The reason it could not handle the DVR workload is it is already storing real time video content from 5 hi def security cameras, running my VPN server as well as my personal cloud services. It is very capable, but everything has limits. I was pushing too far. The large new Synology can run Plex directly on the system itself. Mine is too small for that.

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!
These are so AWESOME!! simply open the case, slide your SSD into the form fit guide until it connects, then put the top back on! My motherboard has an external USB-C, so I connected it to this device and instantly up pops my drive!! SO much better than a USB-A device I was using before where you plug the drive in, and SO MUCH faster!! It feels like such a simple device, but it's so elegant and seamless!! No drivers to install, no software, just connect to your computer! BTW, I bought these in 2020 with intensions of using them, but I upgraded my computer and installed 6 SSDs...now I've further added 2 more SSDs to my computer, and I'm just using them 12-31-2024 with two 256GB drives as backup drives for priceless photos and documents... I cannot say enough about these!! When I upgrade future SSD drives and remove them from my computer, I'll definitely buy more of these to use for my SSDs of less capacity but for more critical backup purposes!! If you have extra SSDs laying around and a USB-C external connection on your computer/motherboard, GET ONE OF THESE!! **Again I bought these in 2020 and they came with a USB-A to USB-C cable...obviously you will slow down to USB-A if you use that cable, so unless they are now including USB-C to USB-C, you will be best to purchase a USB-C to USB-C cable for faster transfer rates!! I haven't tried the USB-A to USB-C cable included with the device, as I purchased a USB-C to USB-C cable from Amazon and when I plugged it into my computer's USB-C external port, it worked instantly!!***

Works well but heat can build when in constant use
It performed as expected, but for my set up the plastic case didn't allow enough cooling for the drive that is in use whenever my laptop is on. Eventually it got hot enough it slowed down. I changed my setup to include a powered fan for my laptop that will draw air past the drive holder. I returned the plastic one for an aluminum cased drive holder that cost a few dollars more, also from Ugreen that should cool better. I have several of their products and they have always performed satisfactorily for me.

Great Drive Enclosure - works fantastic for an SSD
I purchased this to house an SSD (Samsung EVO 860) drive that I've connected to a 2020 iMac. Installation was SUPER quick and intuitive. The whole process took me less than 90 seconds from the moment I opened the box until it was plugged into my computer and I was beginning the disk initialization process (and this was the first time I used an enclosure like this). I wondered about the cable used to connect the drives as some people have commented on the difference between the supplied USB-A to USB-C cable and using a Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C to USB-C) cable as the USB-A theoretically has much less capacity. I tested both and found only a slight improvement in performance as this particular drive was already hitting up against its theoretical maximum regardless of which cable I used. The SSD drive I was using advertises 520MB/s write and 550MB/s read. Using the cable that came with this UGREEN drive enclosure, I was able to get sustained write speeds in the 420 MB/s range and sustained read speeds in the 430 MB/s range (pic attached of results). Extremely impressive and about ten times faster than the USB 2.0 portable external hard drive I was using previously. When I switched to a Thunderbolt cable (SUNGUY cable, available here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GQRLYJ6), the speeds increased by 10-20%. With the Thunderbolt cable, I was seeing write speeds of 475 MB/s and 525 MB/s read. This is still a little short of what Samsung advertises as possible for the underlying drive, but impressive nonetheless. Bottom line: **this is a great enclosure.** For most users, you probably don't need to spend the extra $15-$20 to upgrade the cable to something more capable - the supplied cable should be good enough. It's unlikely that you're doing anything where you'll need the full capability of the enclosure made possible by a higher end capable. If you need the extra speed, however, it's easy to upgrade the cable.

Much better than any USB HDD/SSD I was able to find
I have a small network in my home office with a Synology DS718+ NAS & disk drives on my main workstation that I also use for backups. I kept looking for a USB HDD/SSD that I could use to copy an image backup to in case I have to reinstall the C: drive on any one of my computers. None of the USB HDD/SSD systems would tell me what was inside & many reviews identified problems. Finally, I decided to look for HDD/SSD enclosures for 2.5" drives like this one. I already had a 750GB 2.5" SATA drive (WD Scorpio Black 7200rpm) lying around. After looking at many alternatives to this UGREEN, I decided to take a chance on this one. I was concerned about heat. I received this product within the last few days & here are my results... 1. It was easy to insert the 750GB HDD & the computer recognized it right away. I also have a USB docking station that I use for 8TB 3.5" backup drives & learned the hard way to verify that it could reliably do a format of the entire drive (not the quick format). So the 1st thing I did was to do a full format of the 750GB HDD. Of course, this took many hours, yet it completed without any problems. While the formatting was underway, I touched the UGREEN plastic enclosure & it was only warm to the touch, therefore not an issue. Keep in mind that this is a 7200rpm HDD, which normally runs hotter than a 5400rpm HDD. 2. I then copied 8 large image backup files totaling 421GB to this 750GB HDD without any issues. I have a utility that can do a binary compare of files, so I then did a binary compare of all 8 files with their originals & all passed without any problems. 3. The beauty of an enclosure like this is that I can now purchase a HDD or SSD that is known to be a quality product with a 5yr warranty, if I need something other than the 750GB HDD that I used which had a 5yr warranty. I can definitely see purchasing another UGREEN enclosure & a SSD to be used outside of the office. Conclusion: Based upon the above testing, I really like this UGREEN enclosure. The heat issues I was concerned about before purchasing have not materialized. I like the simplicity of this enclosure & that it forgoes some of the bells & whistles of other enclosures. The $14.29 (includes tax) is a lot less than I was willing to pay. Now let's see how it stands up over time.

would recommend
after looking online for sometime i incidentally found something similar to this model. this seems to be perfect for any internal hard drive. the design is very sleek and portable. thus far it seems to work very well and cant really complain about the price either. the versatility of the product makes it worth more than what i paid. i would absolutely recommend.
