Has anyone used this outdoors to see if their concrete or brick paver patio is grounded? I realize it requires an outside outlet. Anyone tried?

The tester can be used outside where no outlet is available--using the actual earth/the ground under your feet/soil/dirt. I do not know why this is not mentioned in the instructions. Think about it like this....where does your electrical outlet get its "ground" in the first place? Somewhere along your electrical box is grounded into the earth somewhere. Dirt works just fine without using the grounded hole in your outlet. (Remember to test your electrical outlet for proper grounding first.) Again, no electrical outlet outside-no problem, as long as you can reach some soil/dirt/ground somewhere. Just stick (or plug) the end that would normally go into the grounded hole of the electrical outlet into the dirt/soil/earth-it will be grounded. I found that my sidewalk and driveway are only grounded when wet but the garage floor has a good ground regardless. Both areas tested using my hand as the test subject to see if I was "grounded" while standing barefoot on each surface. I also tested my mats using the grounded outlet indoors and again with the ground end in the actual soil outside...both gave the same results. Grounded. I also added a piece of copper wire all the way around one of my sandals but not the other. Then lifted each foot to see the results. The copper wire worked to ground me, and my kid wearing tennis shoes while we held hands-as long as the shoe with the copper wire was on the ground...or in this case, standing on the grass.

why is it that when I hold the metal tip of and put the square part on my skin it says I'm grounded, no matter where I am or touching the mat or not?

If you hold the tip and also put the connector on your body you are creating a continuous circuit - therefore you are testing positive for continuity.

When i stick the grounding cord in the ground / earth, i want to keep it clean. can i wrap the end in aluminum foil before i stick it in the ground?

Yes. Metal on metal; it's okay.
