is this 2 pieces 4' each or is it 2, 2' pieces

2 pieces, 4' each. My track was about 6' in length, so I had to cut one of the two pieces to cover the entire track.

would it be best to use a rubber are plastic mallet to install this track cover over the pre-existing one with the construction adhesive

I used a piece of wood & hammer to seat the track . I also used 2 part epoxy instead of construction adhesive, but was my choice ! I put this on quite awhile ago ,it has worked very good since .

My husband already removed the old track. Will this fit in there, or do we have to figure out how to put that back in?

This fits over the old track. Since he has removed it he can go ahead and install on the old track and reinsert the repaired track. Still should work fine.

would a hammer damage this cap replacement if used to install tt over the pre- existing one with construction adhesive???

No adhesive needed cut track restorer to length install over old track you lightly tap so track cap will fit over wore out track works like new ( I replaced rollers in door first it wasn't "like new" until I used cap) both the rollers and track were wore out original track 33 years old
